Even with the Patriot act the US is one of the most free and tolerant nations in the world.

besides during war time the US has done other far more exteme measures many of which I would not support.

The US has used the same laws as the Patriot act lays out against organzied crime. It is a called RICO. The US didn't become a police state.

Yes the US is still one of the most free countries, but thats doesn't make the Patriot Act any less distasteful. We know from the 9/11 report that the Patriot Act wouldn't have prevented the attacks, what was needed was more cooperation between agencies and the FBI to be given computers (so that they could correlate their intel).

As for wartime actions of the US government, the difference here is that al-qaida (if you believe the hype) wants to destroy the American way of life. Japan didn't, they wanted strategic resources and the US was in the way. By voluntarialy removing your own civil liberties, to fight an enemy who hates those liberties, seems kinda dumb.

As for RICO, the difference is you don't see federal attornies issuing RICO indictments for libraians. And they still have to get warrants. King Bush doesn't think he needs warrants and that is wrong.

You over estimate the effectiveness of police states. You also over estimate their willingness to cooperate with the US just because we can point a few weapons at them from outer space.

How many anti US states in the mideast have been overthrown ? You underestimate how effective they are .

etc. etc.

I'm moving my response to a new thread. Please go there to discuss non-porno issues that have arisen here. Thanks.
