I just had a frightening thought, but it's passed now. What if demi is married to Big Bird? That would explain everything but would be most unsetting.

But Steve, I trust you agree with me that the Federal government is also responsible for that mess, and the continued mess. FEMA is Federal, after all. The leader of FEMA had no business in that position.

Yes, absolutely I do. FEMA and Louisiana officials: the blind leading the blind.

I, too, have libertarian leanings. Contrary to what some with terminal binary thought here believe, I am not an ardent Republican. I feel we sorely need a viable third party. I do believe, however, that a smaller federal government is necessary for matters of defense, international trade, etc. so I part company with Maher, who I feel is more an opportunist and cynic than a real libertarian. In fact, he's a closet liberal in some respects if you listen to him carefully. But then it's hard to pin down a satirist and, at his best, that's what he is.

Aside: You're one of a handful of posters to this board that I read almost thoroughly and from what I've garnered I think you're less of a libertarian than a right-leaning moderate with good old fashioned common sense. So much of the mainstream libertarian message is just that, don't you think?

Anyone know who J. Scott Burgeson is?

I just heard from a Korean colleague that this guys new book blasts Korea. Apparantly it's getting crucified by Korean media. People calling his work place and what not.

Can't wait to get a copy of this Laughing

I was a child in Europe in the 50s and 60s (the dependent of an American Army officer) and we were required to read "The Ugly American" in Latin and dependent schools. Europeans, in spite of the massive aid and assistance through the Marshall Plan, did not have a high opinion of Americans...."GI JOE GO HOME" was constantly painted around military bases.

America's path (in becoming all of the great, lousy, questionable, enviable and generous things it is) has always been littered with envy, hate, dislike, disrespect and low opinion. It has also been a haven, sanctuary, sought-after home, beacon of freedom and education, and purveyor of openness. The information that is disseminated worldwide comes from the USA, about the USA -- from it's policies and laws of accountability. It is very rare in systems of government on this planet to see such availability of information on mistakes, missteps, errors in judgment, lack of administrative control, etc., etc. I can think of no other country in the world that displays its foibles ("dirty laundry") like the USA.

The survey is not new news. It has been a talking point for a long, long time.

Exactly how many other countries have you lived in? What a ridiculous thing to say! You clearly haven't spent much time in England.

If you are truly interested, I have been domiciled for periods longer than than two months in 15 different countries (in Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania), including England. I have visited over 150. I am sorry that you feel that my opinion deserves your ridicule. I do agree with you, however, that England also airs its "dirty laundry" but (again, in my opinion) not to the extent that the USA does.

What, 3 months? Smile No disrespect...but you're not being very objective. 2/3/4/5 months doesn't cut it. America strikes me as more nationalistic than England. We crucify everything about our own country!

Why is America viewed negatively by others?
I know it's been said a million times, but it's true: American's should be ashamed and disgraced that their president is George W. Bush....I mean really, if his father wasn't who he was, what are the chances he would be in power? Moreover what are the chances he would be in politics at all? I am not an American, but i beleive Americans in general, like every country in the world, are nice friendly people....I mean especailly if you go to smaller towns, the hospitality and feeling of belonging (no matter where you're from) is exceptional...
Having said that, I just can't fathem why they elected such a below average intelligence/public speaker/diplomat/ to be the leader of the free world, not once but TWICE!!! I think most people agree with me that Americans are good people, but the regime in power now is completely moronic! I still can't beleive it, and I hope for the sake of all Americans out there that there is a change soon, whether it be to the Democrats or not, but there has to be some major house cleaning in American politics.....
Otherwise, I fear they will be lefy WITH NO FRIENDS internationally (governments i mean) and the American people will feel the wrath the most.

Don't you know, it's part of an IMF plot to bewilder the people of the world to such a degree that the leaders of developing nations will take out more loans without blinking.

Yes, why, the feeling of belonging in small towns in Pakistan and Afghanistan and Palestine and Syria and Cuba and Zimbabwe and Venezuela and North Korea is one of welcoming others. Under the surface we're all alike. Cultural traits are merely superficial. We all bleed RED. yada, yada.
