Tiger,

Is Spain awesome? As a newcomer anyplace feels amazing and strange, though of course you are well-travelled. What ya think? Will you visit Portugal? Don't know why, but I think Portugal would be a very nice place to see. Somehow I imagine the people and their culture to be very nice. Maybe some of that is just from seeing a bit about it on the BBC channel here recently.

Spain is very good.. but it seems to be better when Im in Valencia or if I were to get more southward. My town is mediocre in Spanish standards. (Small mediocre town where not even the millions of tourists want to go even when they supposedly say they want to avoid the touristy areas). I love Valencia.. and once I get to see Andulasia.. I think I will really enjoy it there too.

Portugal. Ive heard ALL good things about that country. Apparently non-EU members are also well-received for teaching English (unless my information is outdated) and all the rest.

Spain would be absolutely incredible if they gave me $2000 and my own apartment..

I agree with Chi-chi. Avoid Kaohsiung. Taichung is OK, but Taipei is definitely worth seeing. The MRT is very user-friendly, and English should get you around. I heard that taxi drivers were learning English to give them the 'edge'.

For a list of bars, restaurants and clubs check out http://forumosa.com.

Thats a good forum.

Fukuoka is okay for a break and a visa run, but I ran out of things to do and I was there only for a weekend. I'd go there again if I just wanted to get away from Korea, but it sure as hell wouldn't be on top of my list, and perhaps not even in the top ten.

I think Taipei is convenient in that so many budget airlines operate flights to and from Incheon.

I would STRONGLY agree with you.

Now that I've been to both...I found a weekend just about right for Fukuoka. The beaches were empty when I went though, would be more interesting to see how they are in the summer.

I liked Taipei. I spent 5 days there compared to 2 days in Fukuoka. I could have spent a lot more time in Taipei past five days, whereas two days in Fukuoka was enough.

I'm off to Taipei on August 31 for a two-ght stay. I got my ticket pretty cheap at 295,200 won with Thai Air, taxes included. I also got a nice deal at a hostel so I'm looking forward to it.

My questions are:

1) Are things cheap in Taiwan and do I have to worry about knockoffs?

2) How is Chinese food in Taiwan? Half of the reason I'm going is my love of Chinese food.

The food is amazing. I doubt you'll be disappointed =)

豬血糕/Zhu Xie Gao (Literal translation: pig's blood cake) is usually found on street corners or in night markets of Taiwan. It sounds nasty but it's REALLY good. Trust me.

I wasn't disappointed with the food, but the food didn't knock me out, either. I'd say Hong Kong is better for Chinese food than Taipei by a mile.

That said, I'd rather go to Taipei than Fukuoka now that I've visited both cities. Neither place is cheap but Taipei has the better looking women and nightlife.

But then again, I think neither city is worth visiting more than twice, as Bangkok, Manila and other cities in Southeast Asia are more fun and more importantly, cheaper.

Having been to both places, I'd choose Taipei over Fukuoka (speaking of return trips anyways).

Interesting you found the Taiwanese better looking. I'm not agree or disagreeing, just interesting. I definetely agree that nightlife is better in Taipei! It was seriously lacking in Fukuoka.
