As a matter of fact I have. When I was in journalism school a fellow by the name of Jim Zuckerman came to give a little workshop. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with shooting the crap out of something from all angles blah blah blah flipping blah. Whatever. What I do remember about listening to Mr. Zuckerman talk was what he called the "Shotgun Approach" where if you shoot something enough you're bound to get a few good shots of it. Fine. I prefer to think about what I'm doing, especially in terms of getting the exposure right the first time, rather than blazing away and Photoshopping the results. I'm not trying to make towers of ideals built on clay. I have a certain way of doing things. Others approach it from a complete different track. |

zuckerman never did make it to Magnum, did he? The point is that Mr.Zuckerman, like you, buolt up a whole false set of ideologies around photography. When its actually quite simple. You try to get the best image out of a situation. Unless you are cartier-bresson with that inate feel for when to press the shutter then it is probably better to shoot as much as you can and get the image instead of trying to be HCB and failing.

Shooting many frames doesnt rule out "thinking about the exposure" nor does it mean you are going to use photoshop as a crutch. Again, why do Nat geo photogs shoot dozens of frames and work the same situations until they are blue in the face? because they are photoshoppers? This isnt making any sense. |

Who cares. The guy was a pro. As in got paid to take photos, published more than me or you will ever have done in a lifetime. Whose building up false ideologies now? Just because he didn't make it into Magnum or Nat Geo doesn't mean he's any less of a pro than people who have been published in those things.
Listen, I don't understand why these discussions always have to turn into trying to prove who is the most 'right.' At then end of the day each photographer has his/her own styles of working, and if you prefer one style or approach over another and it works for you, then that's great. Your approach to shooting obviously works for you. You know I have great respect for your work and your skills as a photographer. I have my own approach to doing things that has netted me results I'm satisfied with. Let's leave it at that.
Why don't all of us meet up sometime and beat the crap out of each other with our films and lenses and memory cards, then go take some pictures and have a drink. |
