In response to the OPs topic, I met a real nice South African in 2002. We were both visiting London and his name was Iain McQueen. He was a white skinned man.
Also met a man from Zimbabwe recently, and he explained many of the problems there.

Always a pleasure to meet people.

I doubt it.

As clever as I am, I couldn't quantify that, but you've made a stellar debut.

Inexplicably, this gem of a thread had escaped my attention. To certain people who posted in here, thank you for my morning laugh.

Christ people. I know you may mean well , but given that there are countless nice South Africans ....you do realise your remarks of " I met a nice one once " , as if it's some kind of interesting and amazing fact are really freaking condescending and as insulting as the statement itself .

Of course not, I just didn't know there were millions of whites in South Africa.

Holy cow. Am I shocked.

Ok, man. Seriously, not joking.

South Africa: History

Mandela: Current Affairs

Aparteid: Politics

Rugby: Sports

Leakey: Science

How did you study philosophy (one of the deepest subjects on the planet) for 4 freek'n years without getting any knowledge on the previously mentioned subects?

Like, seriously? Where did you buy your Uni degree, man?

I am assuming that you need to FINISH HIGH SCHOOL before you go on to further education?

I recall several sections in my Social Studies textbooks touching on Mandela. South Africa. Colonialization of South Africa from the Dutch and the British.

Seriously. someone sedate me.

It never came up. Seriously. We never talked about it. It wasn't until my fourth year that we studied 20th century philosophy, none of which had any relevance to apartheid or South Africa, or current events period (My courses focussed on logic, computational functionalism and AI in my later years).

The only class where we would've talked about it in High School was history class. I remember history class very well, as it was my favourite, and I don't remember it being mentioned at all. I remember the course well, too.

Uhm, I teach social studies now at my hagwon and our textbooks don't make any mention of South Africa at all. Even the high school books. I should know, I've read about 75% of them by now.

Dude, I REALLY want to give you the benefit of the doubt here. I really do. But regardless of your course studies and what was/wasn't covered, there are things called newspapers. And magazines.

I know plenty of white South Africans who would love to have a word with you.

I've never encountered a South African; though, I heard a rumor that they like to party.

I've never seen/heard of one until very recently. I saw that stupid Leonardo DiCaprio movie.

have you heard of apartheid?
it was this little movement in south africa in which the whites kept the blacks down.
that's putting it mildly.
i think nelson mandela had something to do with all that...

Regardless of what Incognito says in his defense, I just find it normal that he never once heard or read about white South Africans, even with all the information floating around in magazines and the media regarding apartheid and what happened in Rhodesia - Zimbabwe, the Boer wars, etc.

Actually, I think that if you grabbed the average uni student off the streets in any American or Canadian university and asked them to describe the following themes, you'd have about a 50% chance of getting an intelligent response:

1. Boer Wars

2. Colonization of Zimbabwe - Rhodesia

3. Southern Rhodesia, Zambezi & Northern Rhodesia, Zambia.

4. African nationalism

5. Cecil Rhodes

6. King Lobengula

7. November 11, 1965 and Ian Smith and ZANU

8. Dutch East India Company

9. Afrikaans and Apartheid

10. South African Border War

11. ANC & PAC, Progressive Party - Harry Schwarz

12. Sharpeville massacre

14. F. W. de Klerk

15. Land ownership inequality in SA

I never learned about any of this in classes at university. I learned about it by reading books and magazines. Now of course, we have the internet.

I don't blame him for not learning about this history.

Incognito, if you want to learn more about SA history, wiki posts this reading material for you:

Give IncognitoHFX a break.

People from the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand know that there are white South Africans because of sports like Rugby and Cricket, and because of high levels of white South African migration to these countries.

Forgive a guy from rural Canada with no exposure to this for not ever having met a white South African, and for not knowing much about the place. As he says, there are probably things that he knows that you don't too.

Canadians henceforth lose all rights to call Americans stupid and ignorant. Licence revoked. Wink

Oh and I've met quite a few nice South Africans and no obnoxious ones that I recall.

Just because someone doesn't know about South African history, you assume he's a moron? Here's an idea:

Who the f*ck cares about South Africa anyway!?

Oh, the South Africans. Well guess what, I'm not South African, and by default, wasn't brought up to care about its historical events. In fact, I probably couldn't have an intelligent conversation about most of the topics Superfly listed. That doesn't make me unintelligent, it just means that my mental priorities lie elsewhere.

Hey, did you know that Sam Houston helped to liberate Texas from the Mexicans? You didn't?! My, my--did you even go to university?

Incognito probably knows more about Canadian political affairs than a lot of you who are calling him out, but that wouldn't give him to right to call you guys morons (although, in light of your behavior on this thread, I wouldn't hold it against him).

"If you don't know about South Africa's history then you're stupid!" What a bunch of insecure liberal garbage.
