Yeah, but it's worth it.

Depends on your job and your location. I like Japan, but being stuck out in the middle of nowhere without much money wasn't fun.

Still, I think the OP should try it (just not with a dispatch company, and he should definitely go to a major city) and then come to Korea later if he feels like it.

Can U.S. citizens get working holiday visas? That would be the smart option, if the OP qualifies.

How is NIIGATA in Japan?

I have an outside chance of possibly working in Niigata. Possibly. Anyone been there or know what might be good or bad about the place?

Of course, but I meant Tokyo or some other big city. I don't think the countryside's that expensive anyway.

i think how much you can save on JET depends on your circumstances.

some of the people around me have NO university loans, and so after paying bills and buying food they probably have about $1,000 in their account.

however, if you want to travel around japan, that takes $$$. the same if you take overseas trips and and go out a lot, then of course your money is spent.

but...when you have a bunch of money tied up in loans, it can be hard.

It's not cheap, and it costs a lot to travel to the city for weekend trips if you feel like getting away. And salaries are getting lower.

The countryside's quite a bit cheaper than Tokyo, especially for rent. My 1DK room in Shinjuku was 100k yen (my company paid part so it wasn't too bad), the price for the same room drops to ~60k or less by the time you get to Saitama.
I knew a JET who lived in the Hokkaido inaka, the rent was just 20k (though I assume subsidized), I assume it wouldn't be hard to find a simple place for 50-60k in a small town. Tokyo rent is often like double that in a small town. Any decent place inside the Yamanote line will likely cost at least 80-100k+ (for fairly simple digs).

I don't know where you lived so I can't really comment, but I found local trains out of the city to be pretty cheap; 2-3k can get you well out of Tokyo (I think it's like 3k local-express to Nikko, return).

Anyway, as you said, it depends on your job (if you make less than the standard 250k, then it probably gets tight). Or maybe we just need to define 'cheap'.

I paid 70,000 in Nakano a month. Just across the border from Shinjuku.

I was at Higashi Nakano Station Sobu / Chuo line, one stop from Shinjuku station.

Bachlor pad type deal. Great neighborhood.

Also close to the Tozai Subway Line.

Check out Dave's JAPAN forum - many people LOVE Japan and save money teaching EFL in Japan. Yet, so many people here in Korea teaching feel that that is not the case.

It's a MYTH that Japan is too expensive and that one can't save there.

TECO: I think I get your point but I think the "XYZ" factors really come into play w/Japan. Ask two EFLers in the same "manshion" in the same city in Japan about making the bucks & you'll likely get 2 very different answers. Yep, there are still those in Japan doing fine and those who...are not.

Ask a 24-yr. old, 6 months into his/her NOVA contract how they're doing.

All in all, as someone who has taught in both, I'd say I prefer Japan over Korea. But...

I'll go w/the majority at Dave's Korean Forum: simply & bluntly, if money is numero uno, Korea is GENERALLY the place to be....
