I've been to London twice, once on vacation and once for business. As a whole, I didn't like Londoners, not the friendliest or warmest people in my experience...but far from rude or unpleasant. And I'm sure if I had gotten to know some of them better, I'd have a different opinion.

That said, in all my travels, some of the coolest dudes and chicks I've met have been Brits from the UK- English, Scots, Irish, Welsh, whatever.

Captain Corea, you are quite right, that calling out a group of people based on race and nationality is indeed rude. And i have been a little rude, a tad sloppy, and perhaps even a mite racist. I have seen your postings on racism on another thread, and i agree with many perhaps most of your points, but let's stick to the thread title: "Why are so many Whites from England so unpleasant to be around?".............this has been my experience; i do apologize if i have hurt or offended anybody here.....I do believe however that the vast majority of English Whites who have seen this thread will suffer no ill consequences; and i find that already there has been much fruitful discussion on this thread......so, i would say, "mission accomplished, Captain!"

And why is a Canadian speaking like a Brit?!!!

Well, maybe you English then should give an explicit explanation in an on-going, consistent fashion of your sense of humour to the non-English peoples of this world. Sorry, but we don't get it. Nevertheless, it is true that we all want to speak like you.......deep down.....Couldn't you be a little more easy-going and friendly about it like the Americans, however?.....New Balance is yummy.....If we are able to enlist The Chinese and The Moslems in this endeavour, we can continue to dominate the world for at least the next century......Frankly and Crankley, if you put on pink lovelies like New Balance's, why certainly I'll bugger you.......show me a picture again of that nasty white dog spanking the pretty girl.

If you have to ask how much it costs, then you can't afford it.

Same for humour, it's not funny if it has to be explained. Maybe you should just lighten up and it will dawn on you.

Admirable effort of you. I've been trying to get a handle on my transatlantic cousins too, it's been very confusing so far.

"taking the piss" is not something all English indulge in- don't be fooled.
If you're hard, all you do is whack anyone on the nose who tries it.

If you're a nice person, you usually put up with it and laff along. Often though, those who give out the teasing can't take it. Thus the lie of it being "just a joke' is exposed- ie, suddenly its not funny when the tables are turned. It can be a cowardly way of insulting/bullying someone, and then retreating to "Oh I'm just taking the piss!" if they get angry. testing social boundaries.

A certain amount between good and established friends is OK. But if you meet an englishman and he starts "taking the piss" within a few minutes of meeting you, then he's just showing off ..or seeing how far he can go. In other words, he's being a w@nker.

Its unfortunate when non-English people from other cultures encounter it for the first time. Because often they will take what is said at face value. I see this process happen all the time when north Americans meet English people.

Hmm..I'm "middle of the road" about it. Some Americans/Europeans seem to be too serious and take it all wrong. But then again, some English folks go too far with it and basically verbally bully those who are less articulate.

Ah, that Bastard Fairies stuff is lovely! And there's no doubt the Electric Six have a much more useful way of filling up the white house......thanks very much for the links, it's full of stars.
As for the humour: when, in real life, I feel hurt by something that somebody's said, if it's not appropriate at that time to say something to that person, I'll tend to stop participating and move on to something else....I guess that's 'the embarassing silence' that occurs quite often in all sorts of situations among all sorts of peoples, from time to time. Usually, I find, people sense the silence and back off. I've found, however, that, yes, white English people so often either don't seem to notice or don't want to notice; and instead continue digging deeper into the hurt. I know that this is called 'taking the pixx' but at this point, I usually just want to get away because it starts to feel painful; and if i don't get away, i either close completely off, or start to inflict pain myself on the other person. Sure, this is cultural difference, I guess, and if I could lighten up, I would. I will try to in the future. But, you know, feelings are feelings; and, however irrational or selfish or weak or unnecessary or inappropriate they may seem to anybody else, they are always very real and important to the person feeling them; and thats the same for any feelings: anger, hurt, frustration, arousal, joy. There's no doubt that many Canadians are quite sensitive, maybe overly so, but that's just the way many of us are....yes, of course, many of us can also be brutes. Thanks again for the linksIve found Montreal to be my favourite place in Canada to meet strangers, as the streets are very open and friendly..and many people there like it when you try to use a few phrases in Quebecois. Austin, Texas in the States seems like an interesting place, although Ive never been there.

I try to be nice to people. Really, I do.

Sometimes, though, people will insist on saying/writing extremely silly things eg. the title of this thread. In these cases, it is generally found that my demeanour/manners/outlook take a turn for the worse.

So, here's my theory: 1. the OP says silly things on a frequent basis (plenty of evidence above). 2. White English people call him a 'w##&&r', or a 'c@@@'. 3.The OP notices a trend but fails to spot the cause.

There's a reason why London is the loneliest city in the world.

OP, not all English people are wankers, racists, selfish or boorish..... but yeah I know what you mean.

No, you don't get it. There are plenty of non-English who do get it. We have the reputation of being the funniest people in the world. And that's according to a GERMAN! So if even a German can get our jokes - one has to wonder just what's wrong with you!?
