| Well, I'll be dipped! Canada won another one. What is that, now...four? Geez, I would have bet against that. |

| My best friend married a Canadian olympian and they don't have any money at all. In fact the guy, who was a runner, couldn't even get a job with the RCMP the first time around. The only job he could get after he stopped running was at a mill. Pretty sad. |

Why is this sad? Is it sadder than any other Canadian having to work at the "mill" |

was he white?
did he eventually get a job with the RCMP? If not, tell him to try again, seems to be lots of opportunity there right now with all the retirements.

| Up to 6 medals now. I thought 10 was a realistic goal these Olympics so it looks like they are right on track. |

a sport is a HOBBY. governments use tax money to help people who NEED money, not athletes who are too stupid to choose a sport that will actually pay them... sure, athletes 'endure a lot of sacrifices', but these are hardships that they CHOOSE to deal with... they can quit anytime they want!
how many olympic sports do regular people actually follow in between olympics? i'm talking about diving, swimming, water polo, archery, canoeing, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, handball, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling...
if we really want to fund our athletes, we should figure out how much a medal is worth for national pride, and give that amount to each medal winner - losers STAY HOME... you could award different amounts for gold, silver, and bronze, and also for different events (who cares about fencing?!) |

| Canada set aside some serious funds for the Summer of 2012. Alex Baumann is back from Australia to head up the new Summer Olympics program that was put into effect 2006. |

Problem is that sometimes winners lose (as evidenced by about half a dozen the first week of competition). |

| so in my olympic funding scheme, they ^ wouldn't have wasted any of OUR money! if you think you have a viable chance to win a medal, then go for it, spend your own money, and reap the rewards! |

What funding scheme? All you've essentially said is "use your own damn money, loser!" |

No one finances my hobby of drinking coffee on patios in the sun and reading the sunday paper. It's great 'n' all you love rowing but I really don't care to finance you. |

Lol, equating your coffee drinking hobby (not even convinced you can call it a hobby) to someone dedicating a huge chunk of their life training in a particular event is somewhat laughable.
Do you really have nothing better to do than make stupid posts |

my 'funding' scheme is this: only give athletes money for results. this way, if you really think you have a chance, you'll invest your own time and your own money in an effort to reap the rewards.
rowing (and sports in general) is stupid. it contributes sweet FA to a country, except national pride if we win a medal. the government doesn't dole out heaps of money to help someone become rich, you're supposed to risk your time and your money to do it if you think you're good enough. let's use incentives instead of a welfare system... isn't this what capitalism is all about? |

Did you see that Canadian 8 getting the gold medal? Half of them their schlongs were semi hard and visible during the medal ceremony. |
