Pound for pound Id say that Australia is the best sporting nation in the world.

If we are using this Olympics as a gauge, as of today, Australia received gold medals in 4 different categories (swimming, rowing, triathalon, and sailing) while the United States received gold medals in 9 different categories (swimming, track & field, gymnastics, shooting, fencing, rowing, equestrian, cycling, and tennis).

Pound for pound I'd say that the United States is the best sporting nation in the world.

I would still say Australia is the best pound for pound and Im a proud American sports fan.
Look what they do in team sports: Rugby, Cricket, Basketball. Improving soccer team. They only have 20 million people.

Going to show their basketball team who's the best pound for pound. If we don't win by at least 15 its going to hurt my feeling. They can keep the rest of those games.

It wasn't so long ago that East Germany almost dominated the Olympics. The wall came tumbling down though, and their medal tally with it.

Australia is doing well, because it's feeding off the Sydney Olympics. I hope the Aussies maintain their high medal count through the future Olympics. England is doing rermarkably well too. It never has as high as it's current medal count. It usually languishes much lower down medal table.

Yes, but America has *consistently* done extremely well, even if other nations have occasionally taken the top spot from it at the Olympics; that's why its medal count overall is far ahead of anyone else.

It's great! Hope the trend continues and hope too we get at least something in track and field. But it's not quite correct to say 'never': we've had 14 golds twice before in the inter-war period and a massive 55 golds back in 1908. Like I said, sometimes nations other than America have their day.

Well, we won by 31 points, 116-85.
