Check out The Damned New Rose. A hugely underated band. Very influential too. Both Punk and Goth got a lot from these guys. |

| I saw Cpt Sensible, Rat Scabies, Dave and the boys quite a few times over the years. Wasn't really into them that much but I went to see them when they came around. "Love Song" was the only song I ever liked by them. Not to be confused with "This is not a Love Song" by P.I.L. |

The Ramones, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols have gotten in.
What about The Damned, Exploited, Black Flag or the Dead Kennedys?
Do you think they will get in?
The Cure have influenced a whole lot of people over the years. Call them "pansies" if you will, but they have left a wide trail over the decades.
That being said, moving further, what about bands like The Smiths and Bauhaus being influential?
As for Run-DMC, yes they were a rap act, but they incorporated a lot of heavy guitar riffs in there. Listen to "King of Rock" for one example that came way before "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith. They were using heavy guitar riffs long before that. Their influence is definitely great.
For that you have to look at Rick Rubin- the maestro. He most definitely deserves the ultimate producer respect!
Lately, I've been thinking about Bad Company. Mostly for Paul Rogers, whom I believe to be the most under-rated singer from the 70's. With Free, Bad Company, and The Firm, he was really great.
Metallica will get in. The deserve it. Yes, they did go soft in '92, but they have been a huge influence on so many.
It will be interesting in the next years to see if the metal, punk, and rap-funk-rock acts get the nod. I think the 80's had some real lean years for great music. |

Benny:
I love 2nd generation Hip-Hop; we both grew up with it. But how is using sampled riffs from proven rock bands = legitimacy? Does it cement RunDMC as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) crossover rap acts of all time? Absolutely. But it ain't rock 'n' roll (besides, didn't we both give Puff Daddy crap for doing the exact same thing?). I do agree that the RNRHOF will have a hard time inducting people as years go by. I would suggest maybe The Replacements, Rockpile, The Stray Cats, or X as alternatives.
Re: the Smiths and the Cure--Johnny Marr is one of my top five favourite guitarists, and the Smiths made some of the best albums of all time, but they're hardly influential. Ditto the Cure, and the main reason behind that is that nobody could actually mimic either pathetic frontman and truly emulate those bands.
That whole goth scene owes more to Siouxsie/The Banshees, Joy Division, The Doors (though I hate to admit it), the VU, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, etc.
Fishhead:
To quote the immortal John McGeoch--"Punk rock was finished when the Damned played their first gig". Besides "New Rose", what did that band ever do besides sell out? |

For years, I hated Rush. I hated all the songs that they'd play on the radio, I hated Geddy's voice, etc. I couldn't find one thing that I liked about them.
Then when I was about 20, I became friends with a guy who was nuts about them. He introduced me to great songs like "Something for Nothing", "No One at the Bridge", "Bytor and the Snow Dog", "What're you doing", etc. I was hooked.
But I will admit that I can't stand most of their '80s stuff. I like a couple selected songs on Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves, but for the most part, I'd rather stick with their '70s catalog. |

Of the current nominees, I personally like "Little Anthony and the Imperials" and Jeff Beck the best (probably 'cause I bought their records when I was still young ...)
I think that there are lots of deserving bands (and single acts) that have yet to get in like the aforementioned Chicago and Jethro Tull...)
For easy reference, here's the Wikipedia list of who's in already:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame_inductees
Here's someone's list of prominent candidates:
http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_halloffame_x2.html[/url]
Off their list of "likely" candidates, these are the acts that I like: Dr. John, Genesis, Heart, Herald Melvin and the Bluenotes, Steve Miller Band, Monkees, Moody Blues, Procol Harem, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Sonny and Cher, Steppenwolf, Mary Wells, Yes, and Warren Zevon.
From their "unlikely" list, I like Pat Benatar, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Captain Beefheart, Country Joe and the Fish, J. Geils Band, Journey, Guess Who, Moby Grape, Todd Rundgren, Shangi-las, Cat Stevens, Dionne Warwick, and the Zombies.
I'd also include Quicksilver Messenger Service, Ultimate Spinach, Ten Years After, Richie Havens, and the Fugs ... |

There used to be a famous punk bar in Toronto across from Maple Leaf Gardens. It was called " Larry's Hideaway. Bands like The Exploited and GBH and the UK Subs used to play there in the early Eighties.
While all those bands deserve to be in Rock n Roll hall of fame. I'm sure there are plenty of Mulleted hicks from some trailor park in hicksville Canada who would rather see Rush in there. I swear having an appreciation for Rush and inbreeding have a lot in common. Especially when your gunning to spend the rest of your life as an extra from "Deliverance" |

So maybe the famous movie quote should be changed to, "Squeal like Geddy Lee." |

I thought the RUSH bashing thread was on page one?!?!?
DMC don't fill the bill for The Rock Hall....but the hip hop hall for sure!
S.R.V kept the Guitarzan alive throughout what 'rock' their was in the 80's...let him in the club
Metallica should be let in with an *... Anything involving LOAD through St. Anger should be stricken from their catalog.
Where does Duran Duran fit into 80's rock supremacy? One of the biggest bands of the cocaine infused keyboard "rock" era.... |
