Is it shown respect or disrespected? I think it's the former, but with English the way it's adopted and changed, what can be done except for man to be man?

Can't argue with that. I believe in 30 years Bush will STILL be the most loathed president in US history. He's going to beat out Carter and Reagan and Clinton. Can anyone remember a vice president who shot people?

So, a couple hundred years of the whole government with a boot on the neck of blacks and Bush will be the worst? I think maybe you need some perspective and a sense of proportion. George W. Bush was a terrible president in many ways but you've got to be a white male to say he's been the worst. Seriously think about how retarded that is.

The United States is a fine country of fine people. Some elements of the government make consistently bad choices. The country is improving in almost every respect. I really don't see any other nation on earth that tries so hard to live up to a set of unreachable ideals.

I think you also need a bit of perspective on this one. Yes, there was slavery, segregation, child labor, and genocide under many presidents. However, these things were fine during the time they were practiced. If Lincoln were president now and had the same policies he did in the 19th century, he would be the worst president ever. We now have a different view on morality than we did 150 years ago, and some one who is president now should live up to the morality of the time.

There might have been a few presidents who were worse, but Bush is up there. Andrew Jackson may have been a little worse, in my opinion.

Anyways, as far as electing Bush twice, he was technically only elected once. The 2000 election was decided by the electoral college, not by popular vote, although it was quite close. Why he was re-elected is beyond me.

He was reelected because of the housing bubble. Americans felt like the economy was going strong. It is always the economy. Almost always.

No loose monetary policy from Greenspan would have meant no second term for Bush.

Yes...by the logic the worse president was Wilson.

[W. Wilson's]record on race relations was not very good. African Americans welcomed his election in 1912, but they were worried too. During his first term in office, the House passed a law making racial intermarriage a felony in the District of Columbia. His new Postmaster General also ordered that his Washington offices be segregated, with the Treasury and Navy soon doing the same. Suddenly, photographs were required of all applicants for federal jobs. When pressed by black leaders, Wilson replied, "The purpose of these measures was to reduce the friction Ц It is as far as possible from being a movement against the Negroes. I sincerely believe it to be in their interest."

-Yet many people still think of Wilson as one of the most PROGRESSIVE presidents. I think we all agree, you don't compare presidents as a whole. Lincoln was special to have stood the test of time as well as he has, the same being true off Teddy Roosevelt. Grant was so BAD he's still famous for being terrible.

Forget it, mises. Some people aren't going to get past the fact that only 62 million voted for Bush, 59 million voted for Kerry, and most were unimpressed with either and didn't vote at all (roughly another 100 million).

And yet still if 150,000 Bush voters had stayed home in Ohio, there would've been a different result.

I'm surprised the bashing hasn't stopped. Most of the world is stupid enough to support Obama. But hey, you guys had the disses coming for voting for Obama and McCain in the election. But hey, don't feel too bad. It's just as bad in Canada, if not worse

What is 'just as bad' in Canada? Canada is an extremely well run country. Of course there are some problems but on balance, and compared wit the rest of the world, Canada is an island of stability, prosperity and good government.

"Boo hoo hoo! I'm American and everyone hates me. Why does everyone hate me around the world? It's not me it's my government, it's my corporations, it's the American media, the military, the banks... THe point is it's not me, I'm a pathetic victim."

That's exactly why no one can stand Americans. If you guys don't like your country then stand up and do something about it. No one takes responsibility, they just have this victim complex.

Grow a set, take some responsibility for all of your problems and people may like you more globally.

Of course, it's not you that I'm talking to, it's your neighbour or it's the rednecks etc. Does it ever occur to you that we have a responsibility for the people around us too? Goddamn, a country of fat lazy morons riding the Titanic.

Pointing out other injustices doesn't negate your own. It's been that way since kindergarten, at least where I'm from.

I have no problem with Americans the people but America the country has done some pretty despicable things and I'm not going to bite my tongue if it's bought up in the company of Americans to spare their precious patriotic feelings.

Why need it be bought up at all? NOTHING you do or say will change it so why bother?

Why, that's a very good question and if you manage to read my post properly, you will note that I never claimed to bring up the topic of America or Americans. It's usually American who introduce themselves or their country as the topic of conversation and once said topic has been introduced, why shouldn't I share my viewpoint?

After all, you puffed-up patriots don't hesitate to share yours.

I also enjoy the way Americans always seem to bring the stereotypes of themselves up as a defense. Yes, we all know America is a big country and not everybody is fat or retarded but that's not actually what we mean when we say we don't like the way your country acts in the international arena.
