What do you think of the recent events in Tashkent. Is suicide bombing going to be rampant there as long as the US has a base there?

I wasn't worried about the attacks in Tashkent. But I was shaken by the image the Arab and Moslem World have been getting of Westerners lately, due to the awful treatment by U.S. soldiers in Iraq. I am concerned that the shocking images may have an impression on many in central Asia, inciting anger, that may cause problems for travellers. And even though I'm a Canadian, I don't think some will split hairs. I'd feel uncomfortable, threatened.

Perhaps if four or more went, I'd go. But as it stands, some have changed their minds on this trip a few times, some have returned to their home countries, and there's no way I'd now go if it's just a two-person expedition.

The recent horrible pictures were just too much. The proverbial back-breaking straw.

Good luck Zed, if you decide to go, given all that's happened recently. Just don't get put into a jail for any reason. Swimming with great white sharks gives me less nightmares.

I think I might be delaying this by a year since I don't think I'll be in a financial position to go all the way. I also expect to be starting an MA in July so I think I should focus on that. i don't know if I'd go alone at the moment either.

I think the official start date is July 30th give or take a day. If there's a problem with the application I may consider looking into yours. Do you have some info about where the grads of your program are working now?

If you want to wet your appetite for the Silk Road trip, check out a book written by Gary Jennings called "The Journeyer". Fictionalized account of Marco Polo's travellings down that path in the 1200's.

Seriously I think that 2008 sounds like the time (and I'll say that with a big UNFORTUNATELY).

Sounds like an interesting book, beast.

I don't know if the OP is still considering the trip or not but I thought I would put in my thoughts. I was a volunteer in Central Asia recently. I think it is a very safe place to travel. Even petty crime is relatively minimal. However, some places have more to offer than others by way of travel. I would encourage you to check out Uzbekistan and definately Kazakstan but you will want to skip Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. The former because they have some tourist industry to speak of and incorporate history and the silk road into that. The latter because they have no real tourism to speak of. Turkmenistan and its capital is a good look into 1984 and Kygyzstan is a little too unstable to have cultivated any real economy to showcase itself or its history. So that's my take if you ever decide to go.
