| Actually, the talent out there isn't mediocre at all. It's loaded with great fighters. The problem is getting them to fight one another and it all comes back to Mayweather. If people weren't so busy chasing him, they could get on with their lives and fight each other. |

| The fighter everyone seems to be avoiding is Paul Williams. |

Who would you call a great fighter? The only ones who I consider great and in their prime are Floyd and Manny. Williams may be great, but he is is still a work in progress. |

lol... Sorry, I didn't mean "great" like "all-time great". I mean like pretty good and damn tough.
But the welterweight division still has tough fighters: Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito (I know, I know.... but what can you do?), Paul Williams, Andre Berto (up and comer)... etc. Manny Pacquiao doesn't even count as a welterweight cuz he's not fighting at the 147 pound limit.
All of those guys are dudes who could give lil' pretty boy floyd a pretty lil' challenge, and he should take it. We can't say he's in a weak division in a weak era until he actually takes a stab at it. Who knows... if all of these guys get their fight on with each other, most especially Floyd, it could change the way people see the division now and in history. |

I was busy on Sunday and just watched the fight last night. Tried to avoid the result and failed. I never seem to be able to do this!
I was impressed with Mayweather who looked so sharp and rarely got hit. However it did look like a mismatch in there, Marquez did not look good at the weight and clearly his power didn't follow him up. He should stick at lightweight and forget about pacman. It was great watching Mayweathers technical skill and pure boxind ability but I was dissapointed with the competitiveness of the fight. The undercard looked good on paper but really failed to excite. Hope Mayweather does fight Mosley next that would be a well matched interesting fight.
Still this was the start of a great Autumn of boxing so I wont complain.
I cant see Mayweather moving up to fight Pavlik. Jumping up from 147 pounds to 160 pounds for a small welterweight is a terrible idea. If anything Pavlik will move up to 168 pounds soon anyway. There are enough great fights at welterweight to cement his legacy. Imagine if he fights and beats: Mosley, Pacman, Williams, Cotto and Clottey. If he retires undefeated after all that he will be a definite top 5 all time great. He will probably avoid all though and somehow justify fighting another featherweight. |

I'll certainly give him his due if he fights all those guys, but I doubt he will do it. Unless he keeps owing the IRS money, then he will end up like Holyfield. In all seriousness, Mosely is over the hill, Cotto, is probabally damaged good after the beating he received from Margarito's loaded gloves, Clotely is pretty one dimensional and I doubt he will fight Williams.
After his scare with Castillo (he lost the first fight), Floyd has simply taken the path of least resistence, building his career on smaller fighters, or past their prime fighters.
I can't see him ever making my top five all time list at any time and only a jump to middleweight would satisfy me in that department. Floyd's resume at lightweight and welterweight pale in comparison to the true greats of yesteryear. as much as I love boxing, it is really suffering now. I can see a whole bunch of welterweights of the past being too strong and durable for Floyd and I honestly think that Duran would rip his heart out. Benny Leonard would beat him and despite Mayweathers defense, Pernell Whitaker was that much better.
I still give him tons of credit, but the greats of the past were a different breed of fighter, with more active champions and more fighters than today. The competition was simply better. MMA is taking away from boxing's talent pool as are other sports. Boxing is suffering and Floyd is exploiting its weakness everynit as well as he exploits his old and undersized opponents weaknesses. |
