Do you live in Afghanistan? If not, what business is it of yours?

Why is that a factor? I don't live in Russia but I can still have and express opinion about it.

I absolutely agree that you can have an opinion. What you cannot do, without violating all sorts of international laws and principles, is send troops over there to enforce your opinion unless they are attacking you.

What is the goal of the Afgan occupation? Serious question.

Serious answer: To put money in the pockets of the war profiteers and oil gangsters.

Right, because Afghanistan is so rich in oil.... Rolling Eyes

If we were talking about Iraq, I might agree with you.

You conspiracy theorists never cease to amaze me.

LOL

It is hardly a significant distinction if I said "natural gas gangsters," (oh, wait, I'd better say "natural gas pipeline gangsters") but go right ahead and scour my posts for any minutia to rail against "conspiracy theorists," such as those crazy enough to believe there exist corporations which profit from war. What an absurd notion! Exclamation Rolling Eyes

P.S. I got a hammer I'll let go to you for only $600. Whaddaya say?

OK, now that I have stopped laughing: Who made you global cop, and who the F are you to go over there and "stabilize" them when we are not even wanted over there and to take my tax dollars to do it?

Megalomania much?

[q You can somewhat rationalize going to Kabul and fighting, but who would have to be there if America invested in the place after using it as a Cold War battlefield? They are people, after all.

Where do you get this stuff? Cold War battlefield? There was an actual war going on. The Soviets invaded and were winning with their use of helicopters until the U.S started providing Stinger missiles.

What was the alternative? Sit by and do nothing and let innocent people be killed?

And as far as American investment...it wasn't wanted. They were glad to take American help and advisors but once the Soviets were gone, they wanted the Americans gone as well.

Bin Laden and his ilk certainly wouldn't have put up their guns if America had stayed and invested.

Actually I've read that bin Laden was motivated by the lack of American involvement after the Soviets left. They felt abandoned. As much by the Saudis as the US. As I recall, he said as much to a European reporter in the late 90's. However, so much has been written on this subject that it can be difficult to tell what is true and what is opportunistic or distorted.

That being said, I doubt Western involvement would have been entirely welcomed at that time. Even by those who were even a little bit friendly to the West. The form investment may have taken would likely have been anathema to the common people, much in the same way American support (and expat behaviour) of the Shah of Iran came to cause his downfall.
