It used to really get to me. I would try to ignore it, but it still bothered me. Mostly because I knew that they were trying to be rude and show off to their friends.
The worst instance happened as I was exiting the subway stairs, a couple of young teens were coming down and as we met one of them screamed "hello" in my ear.
I gave the kid the dirtiest look I could muster, but I don't think he got it.
Now, it depends on the situation. If it's a cute little kid, I try and smile and say hi back. If it's just some jerk screaming down the street, I try to think peaceful thoughts ...........mmmmmm beer, mmmmmmmmm.
One time I told the kids I was "chung-guk saram" , they didn't know what to think then. They know that I ain't Chinese.
It was better than getting mad though. |

[mocking sarcasm]Hey, some of us only came here for money and the easier lifestyle, because of our low job prospects back home. We didn't know we had to deal with all this foreign culture stuff!
I wish those damn Koreans can just respect the fact that when I walk my well-worn path from home to school to Burger King to the PC bang, and the odd time to the bank to wire funds, I JUST WANT TO BE LEFT ALONE!!
Sometimes, I want to kill my recruiter for not telling me that this job is in a foreign country, where I'm a visible minority and will be the subject of a lot of attention, and people speaking to me in some wierd language and they eat wierd food.
I just should have told him like all the other incoming culture-phobic teachers do, and say 'put me as close to Itaewon, Hongdae, or central Seoul, and be advised that I'm coming with a friend, to help me cope with this decision better, and we want to live together and work in the same school.' [/mocking sarcasm] |
Nice attempt at sarcasm, Chronic. Here's my take on the issue:
1: You give back to Korea what it gives you. If you have a good day, you dine on the local cuisine. Have a bad day, then BK or KFC is not ENTIRELY out of the question. And don't forget the latest anime feature at the DVD bang
2: The more shouted "HIIIIEEEEES" I heard, the more I loved the PC / DVD bang. The trick is not to whine, but to suck both up in equal measure. More of one means more of the other.
3: Yes, I agree; solitude and wiring money overseas are the epitomes of evil Western imperialism.
4: If one of those Korean kids went to Aus or the US to live, and went to school with toilet paper in his pocket, I wonder who would be giggling? |
