Yes, you will be better off having a teaching degree. There is no disputing that, however, arguing everyone needs one. I disagree. I learned more from the hands on approach before getting certified than I did while I was doing my teacher training. Sink or Swim can really be an effective way of teaching you the art of teaching.

+1

In my experience, the most unqualified, incompetent teachers. Both Korean and foreigners, were all certified. These people should have left teaching years ago. For whatever reason they decided to stick around, and spend nearly all of their time hiding behind their license

This doesn't go on to say that all non certified teachers are great. It just means you get crap in every bucket.

The furthest I have gone was not with one, but a group of about 15 students. We went to the Pusan International Film Festival. We took a bus. It took about 3 hours to get there. Not sure; however, how far it was.

The furthest I went with my students is Beijing. We took a plane, then a few buses and then a plane back again.

I smacked the living SHIT out of a teacher who did that to my boy and had a look on my face that says "make the circle bigger"... that's my flesh and bone... don't go there.

Many say this is exactly what's wrong with education nowadays: teacher are unable to enforce discipline and are faced with violence, rather than support, from parents if they do.

My mom smacked me on occasion. I deserved it Laughing

I'm also glad that she did. If I could go back, I'd slap myself too!

One time a kid punched me in the stomach so I physically dragged him outside the classroom.
Another time I got 똥침ed so I rapped the boy on the head with my pen.
Another time a male student hit a female student hard across the face so I dragged him out of the class as well.
I think if a student physically assaults a teacher or another student then the teacher is justified in physically restraining the student as long as it's not heavy-handed.

You realise you would have been banned from teaching and possibly fined or imprisoned in the US for that right?

Back in the 90s I had a university English class that was WAY too big to be manageable. There was a group of a-hole loudmouths in the back far corner who literally would not shut up. I asked them repeatedly, I reasoned, I kicked one or two out of the room, other students complained to them. But they were too cool to be bothered.

Finally, the ring leader, a total biatch princess, was the last of the cool enough to brave flagrant behaviour in the face of imminent danger.

Danger came by way of one of those big, old schook, chalk encrusted, puffy black board erasers lobbed with precision by myself across the entire classroom on a tradjectory that would see it smack her perfectly upside the head. Chalk dust everywhere. A roar or laughter. The princess screamed bloody murder, started crying, and said that she was going straight to my department chair.

I gave her his name card as she exited the classroom. Never heard a peep from her again, and nothing ever came of it.

Corporeal punishment is not a good idea ever. I really dont care what the offense is. I taught the worst group of 12 year old boys imaginable , they caught the curtains in the classroomon fire once, Real hagwon hellions. I would get sick of them and take them outside and play a type of rugby using a soccer ball it would release the energy and i could enjoy them shellacking each other.

I was lucky , in high school the school vice principal was an ex marine , he also helped coach the football team and was the school discipinarian, get in a fight you had to wrestle him greco roman, now he wouldnt hurt you but damn you didnt want to get into anymore fights . Also lots of lap running. He was tough as nails , never gave an inch , pretty much loved and respected by everyone. He would have never laid his hands on a child in a harmful way. He probably saved a couple of boys who would have been bound for prison if it hadnt been for him . There are much better ways to discipline.

Many kids here have become too inured to the violence and won't respond to the suppliant whimperings of NETs. And on the other side of the spectrum, many are the cynsosures of their parents eyes, infalliable and peerless. And thats why I'll never work in a public school or back home. I really dig hagwons, just wish they would offer more vacation time.

If you're going to try to use big words, please spell them correctly.

I remember this one Korean Teacher who would walk in and look for girls with hair spray in their hair then she would come with both hands and violently mess it up.
She also liked it when she found them earrings which she would then rip off their ears (luckily they were clip on types) and then throw out the 3rd floor window.

A friend of mine taught at a boy school where the boys called Principal charles barkeley not because of his height but because of the size of his fit he would hit them with.

This is, in a sense, a form of corporal punishment.
