You're right of course. I was factoring in the month long hotel costs and other arrangements I'd have to make. Plus I'm a bit tight with money.

I'm not sure you recognize how cheap Vietnam is. You could get a decent room for under $300 for a month and wouldn't need to spend more than $5 a day on food. We're not talking about staying in Korea here.

The complication is that I'm loath to do it in Vietnam b/c it entails the risk of flying from SA and then I'll be really in deep to recoup all of that.

There are two centres in SA that offer courses and the price is in fact a comparable 1000 dollars. The two cities that host the centres are pretty distant from mine and will have to fly there and back and my wife would be alone for that month in a country rife with crime.

You've got me thinking, though. I can feel a momentum starting.

The other thing is I have sporting interests here which would have to be again put on hold, in an ever dwindling patch of opportunity.

Pardon me, I said that the celta course in SA is $1000. It is in fact $1650
for tuition alone.

And for the record there are now 3 centres in SA that offer the course. All equidistant from me and a domestic flight away.

I know it must sound like I want jam on it.

That's pricey. I'm not sure I would be considering it an option if I didn't have the option of a paid plane ticket to Vietnam at the conclusion of my time in Korea.

Now I see that the Cape Town venue is asking for $1750. The other site that I looked at is $1650 but they probably haven't updated yet.

In rand terms it's R12200 which seems cheap to a SA resident, I mean it's a lot less than one month's salary in Korea. With all costs totted up it will probably be in the region of R20000 (about $3000).

And that amount does rather bring the scrooge out in me, especially with the effort involved and the danger that the certificate might just lie around and accumulate dust.

A bit of a quandary.

If you teach with ILA in Vietnam (lots of their ads on Daves and tefl dot com as they literally have mega-size schools with hundreds of teachers), you can get a subsidized CELTA.

I was considering doing the Vietnam thing a couple of years ago and getting a DELTA from ILA while working for them, just didn't fancy going back to the hagwon-like hours with kid-heavy schedules and not much vacation.

I was, however, sorely tempted by the fact that I could just arrive in Vietnam with degree in hand and manage to work there straightaway. I'm assuming there has been no change on this. That's Vietnam's greatest appeal for working in imo.

Anyway, for all things Vietnam, perhaps it's better to ask on Vietnam forum.

Vietnam forum.

Great advice, I've just given it a lookover. My impression is that job opportunities are concentrated in the big cities such as Ho Chi Minh, Danang and Hanoi.

I'm used to Korea where there are small cities like Changwon with all amenities, yet not overwhelming. I know from experience that I should stay well clear of places such as Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok etc.

However, I've had my fill of Korea and need some kind of novelty.
