I don't know what Korea was like before, but I'm not completely sure that a nation's social progress is always a linear progression from 'them' to 'us'... but yeah, while I have a few students who I'm sure would get along well in the west, I think the majority dream of having a perfect, beautiful, submissive trophy wife who dedicates her life to mothering and supporting him constantly.
To be honest, I'm pretty sure a lot of western guys still want this as well... and some go on demanding it, while others 'adapt'... only a tiny minority actually believe that gender equality is actually a benefit to society. |
If by Western guys you mean Western guys living in Korea, then you are entirely correct. If you mean people actually living in the west, I have to disagree. The majority of men in the west expect their wife to work outside of the home, and are fairly accepting of what that involves. (Her not babying him all the time.) |
They may expect their wife to work, but secretly they desire that submissive wife. I think you'd be surprised at how many western men (all men) desire a wife that will cook for them. |
I desire for anyone who is good at cooking to cook for me. The idea of wanting a submissive partner is bizarre to me, seems like it would get boring. One thing that I've found frustrating is girls that always expect me to decide what to do, I hate when I ask them what do you want to do and all they say is what ever you want to do is fine. If I want someone to clean and do house work I'll hire a maid or a cook. |

Well the problematic result of women's rights in America has been that women are now expected to raise the kids, tend the home, AND have a full-time career. American men and women are spending an almost equal amount of time working outside the home, but women are still doing much more work inside the home. It's pretty unfair. |
So is that a vote to stuff women back into the kitchen exclusively for their own good? |

| social progress??" In western countries divorce rate is near 70% many many children raised by grandparents or in a home with single parent who has to work. Something like 40% of single women who have a child are in poverty. We abandon our elderly in nursing homes. Sure you want this for Korea?" |

+1......those that complained about the lack of gender equality need to start looking in their home country before they open their mouth. |

So... it's better to be trapped in a loveless (at best) marriage. It's better to send your born-out-of-wedlock children overseas and never see them again than to raise them in poverty.

Just pointing out the downsides of treating women as second-class citizens.
Also: It's better for the elderly to do heavy labor on the streets until they die, sleeping in unheated tunnels and such, than to be abandoned in a nursing home. |

So true. Not having a social security safety net is a far better plan than a warm bed and 3 hot meals. |

If you''re referring to the older generation, then yes I do agreed. But the younger generation, like my korean friends who are nothing like their predecessors. I have to disagreed with you on that. |

I don't understand what part you're disagreeing with. Divorce rates should be kept low by keeping women from having other options? Single mothers should be rescued from their situation by taking their children away and sending them overseas?
Or does this just not happen any more. |

I suspect that was a joke, but it wasn't a vote for anything, it was just an observation that more rights for women has also led to them taking on an unfairly large share of the responsibilities as well. Probably just a reflection of the fact that men still have more power. |
