But is morality a human created construct? It has occured accross cultures that have had absolutely no knowlege of one another and whether you are a creationist or an evolutionist, you have to see the advantages of human beings having morals. Live is just better when we don't sleep with one another's mates and/or kill one another. |
This is a perrenial debate. From my reading, the conclusions that I am reaching is that morality is a social construct first and not species specific. That is, it comes into existence whenever a species chooses to live in groups. Something has got to give, and each species works out responses that matter relative to their intelligence and group dynamics. Humans, the greatest of primates, will have the most complex and contradictory moral systems. When self-interest and collective interest collide, dilemmas happen. It's such a complex system that absolutes are suspect because context is paramount. I'm not advocating relativism here either. There are some morally clear cases. A simple lie can have consequences. And from a social perspective it is corrupting. Taken cumulatively, it just ain't good for people who want to thrive in groups. And thriving is what we do best. |

| sometimes i think that life itself is an equal and opposite reaction to the big bang, the universe bringing itself back together like that old windows screensaver with the ball that blows up. |
