Regarding how they can tell the difference between a fresh of the boat person and one who has been here a few years methods include: doing a credit check; seeing a drivers licence; seeing an apartment lease, checking if the person has been a customer of the company before, or looking at a passport.

I believe things like those should be the responsibility of the customer to bring into the store when applying, not the responsibility of the store to go out and dig up.

Didn't the OP say he was an SK costumer for 9 years? He shouldn't have to roll up into the store with proof of his patronage. They have been billing the guy for years and they should have records of him. This is a phone they want to sell to make money, not some sort of privilege. It's SK who should be going out of their way to make the experience convenient for their loyal customer.

The OP said he had been squared away by SKT later on.

I got my international debit card from Shinhan no problem. Have had it for years and used it all over the place. Japan, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. I just have to find an ATM with plus (+) symbol and it's all good (Note: finding a atm plus was only a problem in India.)

I know that wasn't the topic, but you did mention that.

As for being kicked off the waiting list, that's balls. I'm pretty sure that demotes you to second class citizen status if all the Koreans have to get theirs first and then you get yours. That sounds like something we need to raise H-E- double hockey sticks about. A hundred or so "letters of disappointment" to SK, followed by a few stories in the English newspapers could straighten that out.

Big deal, you got a debit card from Shinhan. Try getting a credit card from Shinhan... They make foreigners wait for three months for a credit card that a Korean on half the salary can get straight away, even if you show them various documents proving your employment, salary, etc.

There is only one way to deal with companies like Shinhan and SK Telecom, and that is to go elsewhere. Citibank are happy to deal with foreigners, as are KT, as has been mentioned on this thread.

Maybe one day these companies will realise that they are missing out by treating foreigners as unworthy business. Truth be told, any foreigner here is employed and has a decent salary, unlike many Koreans who they are happy to dish out phones/credit cards to.
