See, yet again you're doing the SteelRails thing and putting words/actions into other people's mouths. Is anyone really losing their poop over this? It's a message board where some people are lamenting the loss of their favourite eating and drinking joints. It's not like this is a rally for violent uprising. So in your view, no one should ever say anything or talk about the past or share experiences. The only thing we're allowed to talk about, according to you, is accusing others of not talking about the things we want to talk about (how great Korea is). You don't want to read people talking about the old burger joint that closed down? THEN DON'T CLICK ON THIS THREAD. Done. And now I've saved you hours of going through every thread looking for something to get upset about. |
Right, but fact is ppl are still whining that Korean ppl arent existing to make them happy. How dare they patronize restaurants with their own pleasure in mind. They should prioritze OUR pleasure. Its okay for ys to want things more westernized, but wrong for them to want things more Koreanized. |

Okay, given that the foreigner to native ratio, is quite lopsided, aren't things already "Koreanized" enough for them? All that is going to happen is these spoiled foodies are going to come through there, make the place popular, raise the prices until the next new hipster area comes along and then leave Itaewon a ghost town. Mark my words, four eggplants. |

Right, but it still sounds like you're upset that "Koreans" aren't behaving in a manner to make your life more happy. |

I still don't understand how it's the customers fault when the owner jacks up the price. |

No, PEOPLE aren't behaving in a manner that would make my life more happy. For someone who always goes on and on about how other foreigners can't see Koreans as people, you seem to be having a very hard time here doing the same. |

So Korean diners shouldn't go to Itaewon? They shouldn't make their own requests for items? Is it okay for NET vegetarians to ask for substitions but wrong for Koreans to ask for pickles? Should they be banned? Are NETs going to have to engage in white flight because Koreans are coming into Itaewon?
Basically you are upset that the people here are not behaving as you wish when it comes to what they like to eat (or say, what music they enjoy, or any number of sad whines that people gripe about).
I see a lot of complaints. I don't see any real solutions.
If a bar I like closes or the food goes downhill at a joint I used to frequent, I move on. I don't get angry at people who eat there or prefer a competitor's for somehow enabling the demise of the restaurant. I don't believe that everyone on earth should share my tastes in food or music and that those who don't are somehow polluting my environment and should somehow be "educated" into reforming their ways.
Put up with your own dollars or bow to the tide. |

So wait, it's wrong to complain on an internet forum that your favourite burger joint/watering hole changed or closed down but it's totally fine to post page after page about people complaining about it? You are accusing people of being narrow minded because they can't accept other people's opinions, yet here you are a dozen or so pages in still arguing with people for not having the same opinion as you? Are you seriously unable to see a sliver of irony in all of this?
Now feel free to move on from this thread. Take your own advice. |

Is Itaewon being over run with zombie like hordes of Korean hipsters, I don't know? Is the service worse, the prices higher and is everyone's favorite place shutting down, maybe?
Seems like these are fair questions to discuss on a message board about foreigners in Korea. However, when I read comments from Steelrails it doesn't seem like he's interested in debate or discussion more like swarm and hyperbole. As if anyone was wrong to have a negative opinion of Korea or Koreans.
If Itaewon is changing as some believe it's a topic worthy of discussion on Dave's. This straw-man that anyone who disagree with anything in Korea just want to tell every Korean what to do is an old canard and should just be ignored. |

I'm complaining to you the inividual, not ranting about ethinc groups of people coming in. At least I'm actually addressing the people I have an issue with individually.
And the issue is the underlying superiority and entitlement complex that people are bringing to this issue. In the end you are frustrated because certain ethnic groups don't have the same taste as you. |

And I would say the same about the gentrified areas in major Western cities, too. The people driving up the rents in my old neighbourhood in Canada weren't the immigrant families or young students. It was the hipsters who wanted to live the "authentic" lifestyle. Landlords took advantage of the situation, that's capitalism. Doesn't change the fact that the hood lost it's identity and became synonomous with spoiled wealthy kids. And terrible "art". |
Nice try, though. It's too bad everything's about race with you. Have you ever considered that you're the racist one? |

Still a symptom of the same problem- Other people exist to make you happy and follow your ideal of the world. These gentrifying hipsters shouldn't do that because you personally don't like what its done. It doesn't matter that its what THEY want to do or what the property owners want to do, all that matters is your concept of some neighborhood's "identity". Those hipsters don't exist to make you happy and support your notions of how a neighborhood should be.
I really can't understand people who would live in a foreign country and get so worked up over such a thing. I just don't get where that idea of being "wronged" through something like this comes from. |
