A lot of this depends on what your contract says. If you signed a contract that says you will get the cash value of return airfare home, then that's what you should insist on. If your contract says he's obligated to give you a ticket, then you'll have to negotiate to get cash in lieu. Half to two-thirds the value of the ticket is a reasonable compromise and creates a win-win situation. If your boss decides to be unreasonable and says ticket or nothing, be unreasonable right back by demanding that ticket, and lighting a victory cigar with it on your way out the door on your last day of work.

Again, check your contract first.

Oh my. You really shouldn't ask him.
Like Troglodyte said, your director may give you an adjusted copy, and you will be up the creek.

Check your email exchanges from before you came to Korea. Usually, you have one day to move out of your place and ten days to leave the country. If I were you, I'd ask him to pony up for the airline ticket- don't accept anything with a layover (if possible).

Get that contract (without going thru him!)

Ok I didn't even think of asking immigration for a copy of my contract. Excellent idea thank you so much. I do have my original contract on my computer but it is not signed by my boss. I will leave that issue out in our meeting.

To the person who said I will be getting fired in my 11'th month. He must give me 30 days notice correct? If he did that today I would be working my last day about 2 weeks before my contract ended. Surely if that happened he labor board would be a valid option for me? Anything is possible I guess.

It doesn't matter that your boss didn't sign your e-copy, just make sure you use it as a reference. No need to make a trip all the way to immigration. Good luck!

When you get a copy of your contract from Immigration, be sure to ask them to notarize it. I know it sounds silly, but if you do it that way, the boss can't pretend that you're giving him a fake copy.

OK some new info.

I had my meeting with the boss. He told me he wanted to hire a couple to replace myself and my colleague who is finishing her contract the same week as me. He told me he would write me a nice letter of reference and do what he can to help me find a nice job. He also asked if I would stay till July 17 (My contract completion date is July 5). I assume this is so myself and the other NET will finish on the same day. I was satisfied with this.

Then today happened.....

My boss works at another school on Tuesday's and Thursdays. So yesterday (Tuesday) he wasn't here. I teach a science class using American textbooks to one of my classes. The instructions I have gotten on how to teach this class contradict the other instructions he gives. "Make the class fun and interesting... Play games... Entertain... etc". Then a week later "You must study from the textbook more. The parents expect the students to be studying science not playing games". He goes back and fourth on this issue so often I am completely clueless on what he expects.

So today he comes into the building furious at me. He yelled at me saying I spent 20 minutes doing nothing in class and he knows because he watched the cctv. I know that is incorrect so I explained what I did in class and asked to see the video. He said he would show me and if I was a liar he would not write me a reference letter. We watched the class with my NET colleague and our head teacher. It showed us exactly as I remember, books open, working on some questions at the end of a chapter. It was actually a really productive class that I felt good about.

So I said "I don't see the problem I am confused. Everything is OK right?"

He just replied "I don't want to talk to you, go away"

Then he moved on to other classes and had the head teacher come up with a list of mistakes I had made. Minor things like "Why is so-and-so not on the same page as everyone else. Can you not control your class?" "Why did you switch the computer on at the beginning of class instead of earlier. This is a waste of time" (I didn't even need the computer for that class I just pressed the power button when I went into the class so it would be on for the day).

Is it just me or is this absolutely ridiculous? What a great way to start a day of teaching right? I am so frustrated my hands are shaking.

I seriously have no idea what is going to happen next. I am 4 days in to my 10'th month and have not received any written warnings. Just verbal lashings.

It seems like I am back on track for an 11'th month firing?

What do you think?

Is this kind of behavior just par for the course for these guys (i.e. hagwon bosses). Does it mean anything? It is very hard for me to know what to expect. Part of me believes he is just trying to assert power over me.

I am sure he expected me to beg for another year at our meeting the other day. But I was more than happy to accept his decision and move on (I wouldn't have stayed even if he asked me too). Does he feel insulted? Is he trying to coerce me into working hard for the next 2 months, under threat of not getting a good reference? Just how important is a good reference from a previous employer when searching for a job over here?

For what its worth he has been an honest employer and has paid into pension and healthcare. Although he was taxing me at 3.3%. I have my NHIC pamphlet and have checked on my pension balance and its all good.

I am confused and frustrated.
