15) being around a group of people who have no understanding of casual, light drinking. It's about getting completely shit bombed or nothing. |

Fair enough, but personally when I hang out with friends I don't want to have to:
1) Watch them engage in culturally insensitive, boorish behaviour
2) Listen to them constantly whine and whine and whine about how they can�t get a deep dish pizza like they can back home
3) Listen to them constantly whine and whine and whine about their b*tch of a co-teacher
4) Have people who have never been to the USA tell me exactly why the US health system/ economy/ foreign relations policy/ etc is so screwed up
5) Constantly hear about how teaching English in Korea is just like being back in college all over again
6) Listen to cynical white, foreign females explain how much it p*sses them off that foreign guys have yellow fever and go only for K-girls, but then explain that �It�s different for you because you married yours�.
7) Spend much longer deciding to go somewhere new or where to go in the first place
8.) Dumb down my humor
9) Watch them get in stupid drunken p*ssing contests over nothing at all which inevitably ends up with a push and shove match spilling a table full of drinks on everyone around them
10) Sit in the same crap bar every weekend, drink the same crap beer, eat the same crap popcorn, and have the same crap conversations (See points 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
11) pretend to laugh at things that aren't funny
12) spend a long time saying goodbye to people before I get to go home
...which is why I posted what I did at the start of this thread. |

| My list comprised things that make interaction with people who don't speak your language laborious. It was a general list that could and has applied to any nationality, not just Koreans. Others added things like thigh touching to make it more Korean but that wasn't my initial intention. Your list just seems to slag off the people you hang out with. I assume you're not saying your list would apply to all foreigners in Korea. |

Why would an intelligent person, well read on the issues, need to have been there to understand the issues? Conversely, surely many that livew there may not be well versed on the issues and have no educated opinion at all. |

True. The point is that the list above is what I was dealing with when I first came to Korea to work. It wasn't my scene, so I looked elsewhere for stimulation. I think the OP should do the same if she's not getting what she needs out of her current social situation.

This. This is why I prefer to hang out with women.
And add
16) being around a group of people who have no understanding of a casual friendship between members of the opposite sex. Most Korean guys go straight to sex when you hang out with members of the opposite sex. |

1,2, 7, 8, and 11 I especially agree with.
By and large the foreign teachers in Korea have got to be some of the most boring and unadventurous people ever to choose to live abroad.
Yes, I know you miss things from home, but you're NEVER going to find a decent taco here. Give up and be a more open minded about trying new Korean food. Thats what they do best here ffs. Don't even get me started on the Hongdae/ local expat bar scene. |

I'd say that applies to bars in general everywhere. It's not like other bars in other countries are filled with rocket scientists and astrophysicists discussing the latest technological advances in their respective fields. |

My best friend back home is a neurologist and she goes to bars. She doesn't get hammered, but everyone needs to socialize. |

I knew blue collar and non-academic types back home who'd sit around discussing politics and history and white collar professionals who'd go to the bar or club and get absolutely crunked or talk about MTV crap, and play drinking games.
But usually people don't want to talk shop when they're out of work and having fun. I mean mentioning how your day went or some crazy stuff that happened at work is one thing, to rant about it for an hour is a buzzkill. |
