Saw this yesterday and it's an absolute pile of shit. I kind of expected it as most of these comic book things are rubbish but this one was expecially bad.

From what I remember, the vast majority of the story was set on a boring looking airship, the main action was rubbish and there were far too many of those tired "knowing" jokes made by the charachters in relation to this being a superhero story.

Why is it that Americans think Robert Downey Jr is so wonderful? In Iron Man he plays the role of a smug, not as funny as he thinks he is billionaire and in real life he is a smug, not as funny as he thinks he is millionaire. Well done.

The bad guy (Loki) was really pathetic and looked like an absolute tool. I love it how Americas love getting someone with a posh British accent to play the bad guy!

The fight scene at the end was pony, too.

Robert Downey Jr has never won an Oscar. But he has won a BAFTA (the British equivalent) and the best actor award in Ireland as well as at the most prestigious Spanish film festival. So spare us your anti American/British elitist crap.

I'm not anti-American. I love American music and movies. I just wonder why American's (and some British people) love RDJ?

He was ok when he was doing getting smashed all the time but now he just looks like a Republican 80's yuppie. And he couldn't take it when Ricky Gervais took the piss out of him at the Golden Globes.

And it's true that American's often put posh-voiced British people in as the bad guy in their more mainstream movies. Doesn't offend me (because it's funny). I'm just wondering why?

Downey Jr. is a good actor. Whether he looks like an "80s Yupppie" is beside the point I think. His last character was a billionaire industrialist.
Its like someone asking why do Brits like Robbie Williams when he is obviously a d-bag and when he comes to the US expecting VIP treatment from night clubs, he then gets clowned by doormen who have no idea who he is.

Robbie Williams is a MASSIVE BLEND too and a bad singer. How is Robert Downey Junior a good actor? This is my question, in every film he is just being Robert Downey Jr. Hammy...

I don't get this discussion. RDJ is an American actor. Robbie Williams is a British singer. RDJ has been in many successful movies which have been popular in in the US and the UK. As a solo artist Robbie Williams has not been successful inb the US. So where's the connection between them? Apart from the fact that they have the same first name.

Good point.
He runs with Nicolas Cage and others in the should be ever so grateful for nepotism department.

But I have enjoyed movies with RDJ...Sherlock Holmes was good....and I loved Weird Science...RDJ wicked small part....but again was playing RDJ.
I also enjoyed Tropic Thunder...he did a good job in that.

I can't say the same for NC.

Most any movie they are in...they play the same annoying character...themselves.

i'll give you that Sherlock and Iron Man 1 were ok for what they were (although Jeff Bridges was v good in IM 1) but I would never say those films can be used a a barometer of a good actor. He doesn't do difficult or demanding roles where he has to actually act.

Clearly you haven't seen Tropic Thunder.

And if you think the Avengers is horrible, when it's critically, commercially, and pretty much universally successful, that is essentially the equivalent of admitting you have no taste.

I'm sorry, but if you don't like a movie that scored a 93% on the tomato-meter, the problem isn't the movie, the problem is you. It's ok, you can admit it. I don't like Coen brothers movies, but I don't call them bad. See how easy that is?

Just because something is popular it doesn't mean it's good. This applies to music, movies and just about anything. Is MacDonald's the best restaurant in the world because it's the most popular?

Cohn Brothers movies are (generally) good. The Avengers was just another CGI-laden comic book movie for people who should grow up.

I would probably love it if I was 12 years old...

Agreed, and essentially my point.

No, but I never claimed the Avengers was good because it is popular. You see, and here is where your argument falls flat. Something can be both good, AND popular. The Avengers is critically acclaimed, McDonald's is not. See the difference?

I agree, I also, however, don't like them. Hence my point about you and the Avengers.

As a chain of fast food restaurants McDoanld's is both good and popular. As a Michellin star contender it doesn't have much of a chance. Just as it's unlikely anyone is going to vote The Avengers as one of the best all round films of the decade. Or even the year. Presumably it's been acclaimed as a good comic superhero movie just as critics might vote Jersey Shore as the best reality TV show. Sometimes people make a case for films crossing over from their genre into being generally acclaimed, like that Batman film everyone goes on about but they're still never going to be taken really seriously.
