Why? If a person is passionate about Korean archery (or anything, really), it sounds sensible to donate something of that nature to a museum. The museum also more than likely honored him in an appropriate manner (although that really shouldn't be expected from a donation).

A typical Korean would take the money, and they'd be damn right to do so.

Well that was out of left field..[/quote]

Home Run!

Just kiddin'. No offense to anyone intended. I just reckon a typical person in Korea or in most places, would take the money. I would! No qualms about it whatsoever. "Here's your bow, now give me my money". That money might be better off in my hands. I'd just assume it would to ease my conscience. I would speculate that I would be more likely to donate the money for artifacts for the museum. Some Koreans would engage in embezzlement over that artifact. Some wouldn't. But...some would!

Now, let's get back on topic!!

To sleep with her...

and her,

and her,

and her,

and her (wait, not her. LOTS of other foreigners slept with her)

and her

and her

and ... well, now I'm showing off and angering Korean netizens. I'd better cut my list off here.

Ah Korea, you were good to me.

Sorry for how unbelievably immature this post is. I'm bored and thinking fondly back to my younger days.

Just one more question: Did you get money out of the museum or K-government for that? I would be pissed at you if you didn't take money for that?

No, I took no money or other compensation from either the museum or Korean gov't (I am, however, listed as the donor). Actually, Korea has a law that forbids gov't institutions from paying for the return of "war prizes" (loot). That isn't to say that there is never any recompense, but it would be something done quietly.

On the other hand, for my help in getting the general's flag returned to Korea, I received a commendation (표창장) from the Cultural Heritage Administration. As a historian, that meant a lot more to me than any monetary compensation could have.

Also, is it the only bow of it's kind from that era of Korean history in a Korean museum. If not, it may be better placed abroad. However, then it would be more popular to many Koreans as they would ask foreigners if they had been to X museum in the states because it has a Korean bow and everyone should flock there to see this amazing bow. So in a way it's great that you got it back to Korea in any case.

Although there are bows of its age and type still in existence today, its significance is that it came from a specific Korean historical event and it's marked with the bowyer's and owner's names. Plus, it's in extremely good condition. If it had just been another bow from that time period, there would have been little interest in it.

I have also been the first non-korean person to visit at least one rural village that I know of.

Any other pioneers here?

Was not always the first foreigner, but I discovered so much around Seoul. To me it means something in personal memory, but other foreigners had little interest then, and I'm confident have little now.

I suppose my most notable achievement possibly relevant to the general foreigner was extensively learning the bus system, well beyond even most native Koreans. I'm not trying to brag, but the information is available in Korean language if you take the effort to learn.

I worked in a rural village -- with rice paddies and only one small store. It was an "interesting" experience.
