| I noticed that when people get off the bus 95% of them hit their transportaion card on the scanner for a second time. I thought this was only for transferring. Is EVERYONE ignorant? They cannot all be transfering. Or am I just ignorant and haven't been told the change? |

| On the buses I've been on, the drivers have announced to everyone that they should do that whether they are planning to transfer or not and there are also signs up on the buses to that effect. |

Thank you, but why do the bus drivers say that? I guess they are just being overly cautious.
But it takes 5 minutes for a bunch of people to get off the bus now. Oh well.
Peace to you all. |

I think you're right about being overly-cautious. And it does cause a jam at the exit.
I checked the gov't. website to try to find out why, but the only thing that seemed relevant is that if you did transfer from the subway or another bus onto the final bus you're taking to your destination, you do need to put your card on the reader when you exit that bus in order for your discounted fare to be properly recorded on your card. |

It's a computer program bug. My brother in law is good friends with the lead programer for the company that wrote the scanning software. If it all worked perfectly you would not have to ever scan when you got off, it would be automatic the next time you scanned in. but alas. The backdoor scanner is just supposed to be a failsafe.

Let me ask you something about that.
The fares for the new system are based on distance. Let's say two riders exit the subway and get on the same bus. Both, of course, place their cards on the reader when they get on the bus.
Rider A gets off the bus while it is still in the same fare zone as his previous subway journey. Rider B gets off the bus sometime after the bus has entered into the next fare zone. If neither rider runs his card by the reader when he exits the bus, how will the correct respective fares be recorded? |

Simple- when you enter the bus, even it you dont see it on the screen, a charge of W800 is removed from the card. When you exit, any refund due, up to the entire W800, is then credited to your card. If you dont swipe the card - you lose W800. Dont believe me? Try it for yourself!
Believe me, everyone has already thought of trying to scam the system. Do you know why some bus readers only say "Thank You" in Korean and do not "beep" anymore? Because people recorded the "beep" and played it when they got on the bus to avoid paying a mere W800!! |

That makes sense.
So the reader at the exit is not just a backup then. |

Under what circumstance would you be refunded 100% of the fare?

If the total distance travelled is less than 12 km you pay only 800won regardless of how many buses/subways you take.
Additionally if you do not scan your card on exit, you will be charged double next time you ride. It happened to my wife and she asked the driver, he said that is the way it is... no refund for not informiong the public |
