You don't have to use it...once you've used it once.
Its a bit like a nuclear bomb. Once you've been seen to use it once...then the threat of it is all that is needed to keep order for months afterward.
That is what teachers need to keep order. A potent threat, a deterrent.

Right.
A caning is a last resort for students that ignore all other warnings or punishments.
If you tell a student to stand with their hands up and they refuse, and so on again and again, then you rapidly approach the point where physical force becomes necessary.
This is why countries employ police forces and armies. Because not everyone responds to verbal warnings. As it is, physical force, or the genuine threat thereof is the foundation of all authority on this planet. This is the reality that you need to prepare students for. |
No. People get inured to physical punishment or just don't care or get caught up in the moment.
That there are repeat offenders, no matter what the punishment, proves your argument invalid. People still commit murder in Texas even though they're facing the death penalty.
Your use of the pronoun "you" should really be "I." You;re the one losing control.
As for your example of "police forces and armies," the numerous recent revolutions should be enough to show the problems with that argument. But it's troubling that you compare young students to criminals or opposing armies. Are you at war with your students? If so, I'd suggest reading some Sun Tzu.
It may too great a jump to suggest that your predilection for the use of corporal punishment suggests a streak of sadism in your psyche, but your posts do seem to be saying that you'd be better off in another profession. |
