Dear Mr. Fox,
You spent your time writing an initial response that was little more than an anecdote with its premise based on circular reasoning. i.e. Poor people are poor because they are lazy. How do we know they are lazy? Because they are poor people. |
A stupidly incorrect misrepresentation of anything I have written in this thread. At this point I'm convinced you don't even understand what I'm getting at; you skimmed the thread, your eyes happened upon something that set off your race-anxiety neurosis, and it was all downhill from there. Now you're trapped, because typical forum pride won't let you just back down, forcing you to misrepresent (or outright invent) my case to an ever-greater degree to make yourself feel like you've "destroyed" it.
Old fat expat wrote: |
Your response-call me names (snide little toad). I believe that was an attack on my supposed characteristics, and is the very definition of ad hominem |
Insulting people in and of itself is not the definition of an ad hominem logical fallacy. For God's sake, are you really this ill educated?
Any more inane crap you want to throw out in your attempt at Internet face saving? Perhaps mistakenly invoke a few more logical fallacies? You can look up their names on Wikipedia. No need to actually bother learn what they mean, just go with what you feel. Or maybe you could expound upon what other peoples are part of the "underclass" purely by force of their racial descent? |

Hes like a 60 year old white guy, wears a hanbok in public and teaches his kids to stay away from black people. His comments in this thread have not been surprising from the old dinosaur. Its like reading Ben Franklin Goes to Korea. |

Mocking people for smoking actually goes down pretty well in Korea in my experience, even at parties. It's not like America, where the slightest criticism turns people into hyper-defensive, "It's my life!" teenagers. You can also take the piss out of them a bit if they gain weight without them turning bitchy over it. They are not conditioned to go into an existential crisis over such comments. Of course, you have to be able to take as well as you get. |

Yes, yes, I know, any excuse to save face. You're right though, you should not have responded. |

How could you possibly be so far gone? Are you really saying that Korea doesn't have hot topics that will make people basically hate you at the drop of a hat? There are plenty of things you just don't say here. |

What am I trying to do? Very simply point out that this topic can be discussed WITHOUT resorting to the same kind of xenophobic/racist remarks that we blast the Koreans for. Of course if you don't wish to discuss it like a mature responsible adult and would rather engage in infantile name calling, feel free to do so. That supports my point more than anything I could say. |
Nah that is pretty much what happens to every thread on Dave's. Instead of talking about the issue at hands it becomes a gabfest about how foreigners have disrespected Korea or Koreans in some way. And you are trying to point out trolls to demonstrate this, which is even more ridiculous.
Do you have an opinion about the monkey cigarettes? Or is that a non-issue because it doesn't offend Koreans? |

What is it with people putting words in my mouth in this thread? I didn't say there aren't hot topics in Korea, of course there are. It's just that petty personal criticisms like, "You shouldn't smoke," or, "You've gained weight," are not among them. |

I would say an African seeing that and having some sort of emotional reaction that might be angry or hurt is just normal human behavior. |
Normal or not, it's a lowly element of the human character which ought to be overcome, not embraced. Pay calls you big nose? Shrug it off. Some Japanese ad has a caricature of a white person. Trivial. Sherlock Holmes the Chimp-Detective making cigarettes in Africa? That's what we're supposed to be so upset about? If my son came home saying another student had insulted him suchly, I'd be giving him a talking to about the meaning of dignity, yet here you are insisting a works full of grown adults cannot ever meet such a standard. Depressing.

An individual who just erroneously concluded I hated a huge swath of the human population based on their ancestry is in no position to be tossing this phrase around. |
This is hilarious. So are you trying to say that historically discrimination has been overcome by people approaching it with apathy and indifference? And do you think that this type of slight would be tolerated by Koreans if it was toward Korean people?
You seem to be implying that the West is somehow hypersensitive about racism but Korea has a free wheeling approach and sense of humor. Not at all. If there is a slight directed at Koreans there will be outrage and it will be handled. And guess what? That method works pretty well for the people of Korea.
I would say you are really offering a strawman argument here. You are trying to turn me into some politically correct fascist because I'm just looking at an ad campaign and pointing out that it is pretty disgraceful. I'm not here to push laws or tell people how to think. I will express my opinion that it makes Korea look bad. As far as how Korea will respond to that, it is up to Korea. I think for the most part it's just going to be a shrug and an insincere apology. |

Who is talking about overcoming discrimination? You falsely attribute both feelings and words to me and then have the guts to accuse me of strawmanning you? Blackcat understood my point and responded thoughtfully in his criticism of it, so there is no excuse for you and fat guy continuing to put words in my mouth.

I've already written about this in another thread. If you care about my answer to it, search my post history. If you don't care enough to put in that trivial effort, then I'm not going to bother to type it out again for you.

I'm not trying to turn you into anything; I have not put a single word into your mouth in this thread. The same cannot be said of you, who has attributed both words and feelings to me which I never myself expressed (and in fact, in the case of the feelings, have even denied). Hypocrisy is boring. |

Would be nice to here from some actual black people--rather than whites aggrieved on their behalf--about how they feel about this 'racist' product. |

Yeah you were pretty much saying that African people should just shrug off ads like this off, and that is the way people become successful.
You were saying I've been "trained" to think a certain way when I see offensive ads like that.
I did make a lot of assumptions about you though, so yeah, I presented a strawman argument as well. I can see that I was wrong about that point.
I don't know though, you already admitted you lack empathy. I think that's about all I need to know really. |
