I got the suit, got the black-leather shoulder bag (which I almost never carry now, as it happens, since I don't need it), and apart from my blue eyes, I blend right into the Korean scene.

Sure you do.

Maybe but universities don't necessarily hire for a proficiency with the English language:

This is plain embarrassing. All these highly lettered people can't craft two error free paragraphs. One guy can't even spell his own name right.

It may be true that Korean universities don't hire professors based on their proficiency in English is, you must consider that professors rarely are the ones responsible for putting up universitiy websites. I worked for the information services department at an American university and they did most of the internet postings for professors. So they were really the ones who produced the websites.

I still see no reason why it should make a difference when you're not at or around work. Should I wear a suit if I go to Japan for a trip because people there will treat me with more respect? Who cares? Who cares if either Seoulites or Vancouverites think I look like a bum? I don't care how they dress and can't be bothered to worry about what they think of me. I enjoy looking professional at work and looking like a slob when I'm not.

This is good, I doubt that Bill Gates gives a shit either whether people think he is a bum or not. He is still laughing all the way to the bank.
