My this is a discouraging to read! Sammy and his wife were not allowed entry to the 'Hollywood Basement' because of their race. This is racism pure and simple and it is not an acceptable practice in this day and age. So what if this is Korea, it's still an archaic practice and quite humiliating to those who are subjected to it. I certainly will not support such businesses knowingly.
How demeaning to Korea to be known as a racist country, but even more demeaning is those who would defend this practice. My god this is a Country that hosted the World Cup. This was done in one of the most diverse areas of Korea, Itewon. Lets quit making condesending excuses for something that is deplorable. |

Show me a country in the world that is not racist. I will make a liar of you.
I have been to Hollywood Basement and walked straight down the stairs, past the bouncer and past a whole lot of Korean men who were not being allowed in until a whole lot of Korean men walked out I guess, so the 'quota' doesn't get over filled. Yes it is kinda stupid, but if you are going to bars looking for a whole lot of Korean and western single women then you will be walking straight back out again if the place is filled with Korean men in their 30s won't you? Bars like a consistent scene so they have instructions for the bouncers. They want to be a reliable place for people to go to week after week without having to worry about travelling all that way only to find it to be ajashi city.
I guess the protest out side is going to comprise of every ethnic group in the world pretty shortly.
And would that person stop making comparisons to Rosa Parks and King. They were in public places arguing about seats on public buses and various other issues of treatment by government and public institutions. This is a private nightclub so the comparisons are a little lame.
Do you really think that no one is refused entry into a club in the US based on race? Must be a racist country.
Denying people entry based on race is annoying but understandable under certain circumstances. Just the same as denying people based on sex. Which I have had happen a lot in my home country. I don't march up and down the streets with signs saying this country is sexist based on that lame example.
If you are disgusted by Hollywood Basements practice then go somewhere else. If you happen to make a dent in their profits you may gain a victory, but you are fighting a bit of a tide here.
good luck

No one is defending it. No one has said that it was a good thing. What they said is that you cant do anything to change it.
There's a big difference between the two. |

How defeatist! You can't change anything so why bother trying? Sure with that attidude you can't make a difference. I guess we each have to make choices based on our beliefs. Are they socially responsible choices or is the most important thing my instant gratification? You make your choice and I'll make my mine. I won't go to the Hollywood basement or any other places that employ overt racism.
As for the person who said there is racism everywhere, sure there is, but in the US there are also laws about that, and people have legal recourse. Whatever the case, it is cerainly not a logical argument that because it exists all over there is nothing you can do about it in Seoul. Remember this is not some backwoods town in Korea, but a major tourist zone in Seoul.
I'm not going to invest any more time debating this issue with you because I think it is quite black and white. No apathetic rationalization for non-action is going to convince me that racism is acceptable and I should do nothing about it.
Cheers to you Samy for standing up for what is noble and right! |

That covers the "U.S. = world" bit.
And the rest is inferred from previous posts.
Real point is, though, that everyone agress on one thing, no matter which side they're on. Samy shouldn't go back there. Dunno why everyone wants to play Ring-Around-the-Rosie more when we're all supposed to be in at dark in the first place. |

Do you work in a hogwon? Many of them "employ overt racist practices"......

But this is not the US., this is Korea. Why do you want Korea to be like the US? You don't walk into someone else's house and say "Hey! Don't do it this way! In my house, we do it this way!" |

[quote="Derrek"]If they say, "We don't want Arabs because they are all terrorists", then that's their business.
If they say, "We don't want blacks because they do drugs and sell them", then that's their business.
If they say, "We don't want Caucasians because they steal our women" then that's their business.[quote]
Of course it is their business... however does that mean that we should support such behaviour. I believe him, based on my experiences here... and I think you might as well. You said that this is politically incorrect Korea. Yes it is.... but should we just tell this guy to deal with it. I dont' think so. I for one don't want to give my money to any establishment that would take part in such practices. And I am deeply troubled and dissapointed by people that do. |

| Some people look like trouble...it is just better to not let them in the club to begin with. Clubs hate to have police show up and ruin the night because some moron was making trouble. Maybe if you are denied entry into a club, then you should look in a mirror and go home and change. |
