Canada declared war on Germany in 1939, two years before the Americans. |
Yeah, that was a decisive moment in history. And, if I'm not mistaken, didn't Canada essentially have no de facto choice in the matter? And were they first to declare war? When, exactly, did Canada take the lead in WWII?
|
And for the record, Canada declared war on Japan almost immediately after Pearl Harbour, on Dec. 7, while the U.S. Declaration of War wasn't made until the 8th. |

NO way! the Canadian's face is all out of proportion! Her eyebrowns are drawn-on terribly, her eyes are tiny and buggish, and nose is wierd and her hair DOES look pornstaresque. I don't know how you could think she's hotter. You must be Canadian. |

That's why I only said a bit... I was really close to saying the American one, actually.
Hell, they're probably both American, anyways. Thanks for attributing my choice to my nationality, though. |

in terms of environment: I'm gonna have to say that the Yukon is almost exactly the same as Alaska but less space. DON'T compare NWT or whatever to Alaska cause that is just wrooooooooong: It's completely dissimilar: the YUkon....now THAt's where it's at
cold expansive DESERTS? You betcha! We got acres of tundra up north: a virtual desert! plus...the edges of our prairies are slowly being taken over by sand and BECOMING desert...so that's pretty much the same.
I wouldn't compare woodlands......norther bc, alberta saskatchewan AND manitoba is almost ALL forest. the forests are retaaaahded huge.
It seems to ME that most (thought not all) things that the US has, canada has too. But, just like it's population, everything is about 1/10th as impressive.
We don't have the grand canyon but we have badlands
we don't have the high colorado rocky elevations, but we do have the canadian version.
we have a fairly good size chunk of plains but still 1/2 the size of our american counterparts.
our forests are HUGE.
We have temperate rainforests that are.....breathtaking: I'm not sure if the US has that....anyone?
The ONE thing that canada has that the US DOESN'T have is our famous bedrock: the Canadian shield. so suck it  :) .
Canada is missing tropics...warm climes. I've heard it said that it is difficult to live in a better climate than the la area.
The grand canyon, monument valley; even the lesser known parks (yosemite etc...) those are all just crazy crazy...and THERE, canada can't come close.
Otherwise, i'm gonna have to posit: In terms of natural environment: they're almost exactly the same. |

Better military? Granted. But what the heck do we need a strong army for? I know some American here will say "we protect you". But, from what? We're in no danger. You are the ones with targets on your backs.
quote]
I am not going to rant and rave over this comment, but it wasnt a good one. a military is one of things that you never really count until the poo hits the fan. it was only 20 years ago that the western world went to sleep every night wondering if tomorrow would bring a nuclear holocaust.
and who was it providing the umbrella that protected everyone west of Berlin? who's troops stood on a wall in Korea and Germany to let the west go to sleep at night? who's airforce flew in food and water for how many months into Berlin when the Soviets closed the rail line?
I could go on for a long time about countless countries that owe their lives, freedom, and economy to the American military. please look a bit at history before you make a comment of "who needs a military?"
and the biggest difference between the two countries is history and its effect on current culture. For example, who is Canada's George Washington figure? Or Abraham Lincoln? obviously they have none. I am not saying that is good or bad, as american society has many flaws, but our cultures have some distinct attributes because of those things. the US has always had a winner take all attitude. the cowboy "dont mess with me" mentality. i think that gives americans a lot more of a competetive spirit, but perhaps our crime rate has something to do with this. i dont want to go into detail, and i am not much of a socialogist, but history creates culture. the American Revolution, Civil War, and Cold War have definitely made the US a different country from Canada. |

khyber, the way I read your post I come to exactly the opposite conclusion. And, some of your points are just wrong. Desert? You're comparing the Sonora and the Mojave to an icy "desert?"
Anyway, in many a standard of living assessment, Canada wins. And pretty much everything other than the objectively observable is open for debate and simply cannot be settled objectively as it depends on what you want/need. BUT, geography and climate IS objective. While there are subjective preferences, this is an easy one to determine. Objective was asked for. Objectively, this really isn't close. You get the standard of living, we get the lucky geography. Well, maybe not so lucky: we stole Hawaii and bought about half of the rest. |
