I have been told by more than a few people that Canadians are held in lowish regard here.

That could very well be due to our [read: YOUR] English usage, particularly if we [read: YOU] claim to be an ESL teacher.

But I wouldn't know for sure because every time I've ever acted like a jackass in Korea and had people ask me where I'm from, I always said "Michigan".

And I suspect there are more than a few posters on Dave's who are not of the nationality they claim to be.

The last thing I am worried about is a small little man not allowing me to join his club...cult...I mean group, because he doesn't like Canadians.

Look at this honestly:

This guy is some sad little monkey sitting in his villa with no friends and nothing to do. Probably has a mental disorder. I can see him now wearing his tin foil hat and grandma's panties on his head saying "No Canadians, No Canadians".
Trust me, we are better off to leave him alone and the last thing we need is to give the freak any attention. Better yet, let's all make "groups" and write in to the herald about them so they can print about it. I will exclude......British people. No reason exactly but they eat fish and chips and only a savage would do that to a fish (note the humor).

The truth was revealed to me by a (Canadian) friend who was, in fact, the "Bernard Carlton" mentioned in the original KH piece. According to him, the real organizer of the club was a (Canadian) friend of his, a person I've met a few times. He came up with the idea as a joke while chatting with friends over drinks at the Three Alley Pub in Itaewon. He scribbled out the ad and decided to send it in to KScene for shits and giggles.

Once placed, it received some attention, but not a lot, probably reflecting the magazine's less than stellar readership numbers. He got the occasional nasty email from Canadians with their cold noses bent out of shape, as well as a email or two from non-Canadians who happened to agree with his assessment. I saw some of these message myself and I must say, a few Canadians were pissed.

It was at this point that my friend got involved. He was given access to the email account used to set up the club and began responding to some of the complaints in his Maple Leaf-hating Bernard guise. He had a back-and-forth with one woman in particular that wouldn't end until he finally told her it was just a big, fat joke designed to poke some fun at thin-skinned Canadians.

So, the mastermind of this little gag is Canadian, and his lackey was also Canadian. It was supposed to be a silly joke that went no further than the KScene magazine, but the dilligence of a one KH reporter broke it wide open, resulting in the hurt feelings of many Canadian-flag-patch-on-the-backpack Canadians.

My old boss was looking for my replacement and for some reason asked me what country I suggest they be from. She mentioned a few and I asked "why not a canadian?"

Her reply:

"Canadians are all hippies!" Shocked

My co- worker cut out and sent the Herald blurb to Leno, who showed it last night (Tuesday) on "Headlines."

I thought it was hilarious...Swifty irony.

I'm from Canada and must insist that he is on to something. The Canadians who come to Seoul are the most SMUG idiots I have every had the displeasure of meeting. Canucks are crazy-smug to begin with, but the bunch here are just incredible.

Being Smug is the principle Canadian trait. That and insecure that the nation doesn't matter. I have been told by more than a few people that Canadians are held in lowish regard here.

how many canadians have you met that came to seoul? please be more specific. And from a strictly logical perspective, saying that being smug is the principle Canadian trait is well...a slight exaggeration. but that is my opinion, and this IS the internet.

As for canadians being hippies, the ones that come over here, yes, I agree, there is a decent chance that they will show hippy tendencies. I believe that people that leave their home country will show similar personality tendencies.

question, have any americans here had any decent experience with canadians in korea?

Yes, just as Canadians have had lots of decent experiences with Americans. It's just those aren't interesting so no one posts them.

Hey guys. I met a cool Canadian or American today. We talked about football and snowboarding. Figured we might try to hit a couple of tourist places together while we were here. I can't imagine a better traveling partner.

is not the same as

I met this Canadian or American today and he seemed strange but thought maybe we could go to Thailand together as I know no one else here. Anyways, we get to the airport and the idiot blows up at the clerk. Then, when the flight attendant cut him off from drinking, you should have seen it. Oh well, Thailand should have been better, except for this idiot ...

ah, a person with rational thought!

I know, my AMERICAN bros (who i'd back up anyday over any Canadian) would always have my back as well. but it just doesn't make an exciting story. It also wouldn't be as entertaining saying, I met a fellow american, or fellow canadian, and what AN ASS, he insults every korean he meets, and purposely blows his knows in public, he doesn't know how to use chopsticks!

it's hard separating oneself from one's "group" ie, religion, country, so on, to see that everyone is the same. there are idiots and good people. I've met strange canadians here, strange americans, cool canadians, and cool americans. that's boring though..

Most of the people that I have met here have been pretty cool, but there have been a few who weren't. Three were complete idiots from Canada, two were comlete idiots from the USA and 1 was the biggest jack-a$$ Australian. The one Canadian guy is actually a decent enough guy but just so rough around the edges he gets under people's skin (but he isn't an English teacher). 90% of the people I have met here I like, in fact some of the nicest people I have met are here. Also, 75% of the people I know here are Canadian.

Another thing that it could be is that I don't go to Itaewon and meet drunk people. Drunk people are idiots.

Im very interested in hearing your story. Please do share. You seem to have an extensive experience with a large number of canadians. I'd like to hear it.

me too. i hope Papertiger has not been banned because his posts were the funniest i've ever seen on here.

Mind you, considering his competition consists of the likes of Bulsajo and Steroidmaximus, it's no great achievement.

It's a numbers game really. i'm a fervently patriotic American (but not a Bushie Laughing )and the only other English-speaking countries I've much time for are England and Australia. I would like to visit Canada however. But the problem is.....when back in the States, when you meet a Canadian, it's always kinda refreshing, because Canadians always seemed to be pretty cool people and a novelty. In Seoul it seems everyone's a Canadian. so i and others went through rarely meeting a Canadian to meeting one every day. and let's face it, the Canadians most likely to travel at all are the uppity pinko hipsters...peopple who lead an 'alternative lifestyle'. In Seoul many of them are just douchebags and that's a pity. Especially the girls. My word...they're TERRIBLE! Not much to look at, wear militant left wing student clothes and have really dull poisonalities.

Not to nit-pick, but this mistake really cracked me up! Sounds like a Cliff Clavin-always blowing his knows.
