The mortgage repayment is not included in 2.4 cost of living. That 2.4 is bills. Food and bills.
The mortgage is not really an investment. Our chonsei is dead money. It tends to not exist and doesn't apply to any of our income gain or loss. The mortgage is our only housing expense thus is the first one. It should really be included in the main expense.
For all that's said and done, what can I say? It gets harder as you get older. I just wish I could have earned 4 million when I was still trying hard on an E2 visa with two children. I fought like crazy against the crap establishment here to get it (the visa system) changed. Suddenly they did. Now it seems many others are reaping the rewards. I feel it's too late. I'm drained out. It's a hell of an effort to go from place to place and teach privates. If I could have done it nine years ago sure it would have made things easier now.
I guess I'm bitter I lost my youth. Can't help the way I feel.

Anyway, I got some encouragement from this topic so am considering new ways.

Unlike an old dog I'll learn a new trick.
I'd better learn a new trick 'cause I am starting to hate anyone who calls themself my employer. It's a reaction to my past. I feel like I want to strangle them. I have a Diploma of teaching. I have a BA with one of the majors in Korean language, of all things.
But, I cannot for the life of me find a decent location for my own niche ( a small school perhaps) 'cause everytime I go to look into one particular spot, the very next week there's an English hakwon just popped up there! I can't stand these crazy Koreans who start schools simply because they have nothing better to do. So, shall I compete with them? Wait until a recession and buy them out? Or figure on something different?

and the fact that PRagic is making 3.2 million or so and has a PhD but my Korean boss makes 6 million a month for having a Phd. Man, Korea is a fucking joke! It would be great if we all refused to work for universities and told the Koreans, to pay equal or get lost.

Hi. I make 1.9. Nothing more, nothing less. Just thought I'd poke my head in here. Smile

I'm happy with what I've managed to save though, and fully paid off my loan this year!

JZer: Just for the record, its 3.6 for a 10 contact hour, 2 day a week schedule. I don't do overtime as I make a mean buck on the outside, and not in teaching.

The next position will pay more than 4.0 for 12-15 hours an academic year. Things do get better, but it takes some time. I do feel for people remaining the ESL field at Korean universities, though. The pay and conditions are not what they used to be.
