Registered high school teacher (GradDipTchLn) for Geo/SocSt/ESOL/JnrEnglish + BA (Dble major incl. Korean language major) + CELTA cert.

All hard labor to get these.
Four years just for the degree. (I'll admit I found I didn't have the know-how to squash it into three.)

So, you got an Ed. degree then?

Actually, I praise those who are interested in staying in Korea a long time, but in their circumstances are in process to getting the qualification and legality. But I don't respect people who just come for a ride and if get caught shrug their shoulders, criticize the place, then fly to Thailand or China.
I do believe that an influx of illegal workers (as part of a greater majority of genuine teachers) can bring general salaries lower. It depends on numbers.

You wouldn't be competing for the same jobs as illegals then.

I have met thousands of people before and during university. I didn't meet any that were getting their degree to teach English in Korea. I met a few however that were considering teaching in Asia for one year to help pay for their education while they were in their 3rd or 4th year.

I think it is up to Korea immigration to do their job and hogwan owners. If these two entities can't do it, then it is Korea's problem. I don't condone illegal teachers, but I also don't like people ratting out another FT just on a hunch or even on a factual basis. The above posters are not considering their actions for the good of the profession, they are doing it for revenge on their hogwans.

Panic, the hogwan faces almost no fines whatsoever. They don't even really get a slap on the wrist. It is the FT that bares the full brunt of punishment for working illegally. often an FT has been farmed out by his/her original school, often not knowing they need a second E2 stamp.

The problem is about lax immigration rules for visas (i.e. not applied evenly). Hakwons willing to hire illegals and teachers themselves working illegaly. All share the blame.

I think the Op has very debatable motives for wanting to report his former co-workers. At the same time, I also hold no sympathy for an illegal teacher who gets busted. You want to gamble, well be ready to pay the piper at some point if it happens.

Also, illegals do have a negative impact on the overal teaching market here. Much like the very few idiots who give all of us a bad name with idiotic behaviour and carelessness.

Yes- they have treated me like total **** from day one- have lied to me about what's supposed to be withheld from the monthly pay- they have been informing the owner and director about everything I've been doing (including telling them my handle on Dave's esl), and they have been receiving extra pay for doing it
Plus, they are illegals- it's been confirmed by a friend of their's
Instead of just flaming/trashing posters on this board, who really need help, people should try to find out what's going on- this is true of many others- I have IM's from others who told me to NOT post here because of flames and rats.

Oh, and the "logic" of some of the flamers here (SeniorEnglish, for one)has convinced me I have no choice but to have the illegals reported to immigration.

I'm not judging you here, but I hate the "oh, everyone just flames, blah blah blah, I really needed help, blah blah blah." People go with whatever information you gave. You gave more here, but people only have info from the OP, so if you don't want to be flamed, don't post, or post enough information that you wouldn't assume (not knowing anyone or anything about the situation) something bad from it.

We aren't the ones asking for information on how to rat out coworkers. If you did not get along with them work on your social skills. If your boss treated you like a heap of sheeeit forget about it an move on. What you are proposing has nothing to do with doing the right thing. You want revenge on people who probably took offense to you in some minor or major way. Whether they are right or wrong for how they treated you in no way justifies you snitching them out to immigration with the sole motivation of revenge just to get back at someone.

Come to think of it I rarely talk about where I went to university. If someone asks I just say a small college in the Pacific Northwest. Where I went to University is so unimportant in the greater scheme of things its hilarious. I stopped asking that question about a week after I graduated. The real issue here wylie is how long its going to take you to grow up and move on from an employment that dealt you a bad hand. Not how quickly you can make everyone miserable. Most people stop playing the get even game by about the 5th grade. Are your ex-coworkers the only ones who have something to worry about, or is there something you would like to tell us?

This is a very childish statement.

I still wouldn't do it if I were you but...*beep* 'em. The sound like ********. If they are willing to screw someone over for money (I can only trust that what you are saying is true) then you are just returning the favor.

So have you done it or not?

Ok, maybe the OP is for real, but if he is for real, he should at least realize that it's one of those subjects...can of worms...etc. All this would be so much better solved if he'd stick to PM. Not that I know how to advise you OP, so prease no pm to doggy.
Are you guys starting to see the picture?
Congrats though, if it is a troll...it's a good one.

Don't worry Superfly, I got the PM. Yes, I suffered the wrath of wylies99 on the main board and he cared enough to send it PM as well. I'm still suffering from the stinging tongue lashing he gave me. And I had to endure it twice. I guess I'm just a big classless meanie. Crying or Very sad Next thing, he's gonna call me outside and ask me if I wanna go. Listen, don't cry here, go home and cry to your mommy.

I stood up for my myself and my rights as a legal teacher and I was fired for doing it. The poster directly above flamed me for "not having a job." Classy, very classy.

PM Wylies99 wrote: "My hogwan fired me for filing a labor complaint
And you flame me for it. VERY classy."

Here was my response "I wasn't flaming you for being fired - don't be so sensitive. When I said you didn't have a job, I meant that it seemed that way because you had so much time to do immigration's job. Filing a labor complaint is one thing, but you were talking about ratting on fellow teachers, who are illegals. This is when I said you must have too much time on your hands."

The only people who don't want to talk about their college/university lives are the ones who either didn't go or had such shitty times that they refuse to speak about it. If you had a great time, like I did, then you'll want to talk about it.
I'm getting ready to fly to Daegu in 2 weeks, and it seems to me that I'll be stepping into a fire of a-holes from the pieces of work that post on this board.
Man, people, get some lives...if teachers are teaching illegally that just means they too lazy or too stupid to do it legally.
I say rat em out. But what do I know? I'm still in Canada.

I agree with this.

I have no hesitation in telling people where I went for Uni or what I did. I don't consider it a secret.

Yes, you should definitely do it. Do it in big red letters two feet high. Scream it from the hilltops. Then get ready to look like a real geek because the guy is legit and probably just didnt want to talk to you about school. So, yeah do it. Today.

Well I decided not to push the participation button as my ex-hagwon would just get another illegal and I would have to do it all over again Sad.

I really do have better things to do with my time on such a beautiful summers day. My mission for today is to find a good translation service in Pusan and then it's off to the Labor Board office.
