| Stumptown - your dates are a bit wrong, I feel. Sabbath's debut was not in the 60s and 'Paranoid' was absolutely in the 70s. |
That's right Spinoza, Black Sabbath's first album was released in 1970, a few months BEFORE Deep Purple in Rock. Black Sabbath's follow-up Paranoid also came out in 1970, a little after DPIR. All great CDs - but to say Black Sabbath is not as brutal and heavy as Deep Purple? Just listen to title track "Black Sabbath". It was about an experience Geezer Butler had one night where he saw a black figure standing at the end of his bed. The next morning, he noticed the occult book that Ozzy gave him had vanished (too many drugs). Ozzy's vocals in this song are more macabre and sinister than anything Deep Purple ever put out. I agree with you though that Ritchie Blackmore's solo in 'Child in Time' was outstanding, for that time. |
This tune rocks the World!!!!!! |
Exactly. Compare Sunshine of Your Love and I Feel Free (don't tell me those aren't bugglegum pop) and any of Sabbath's songs. Heck, compare the names of the bands. Cream and Black Sabbath. Which wouldn't you want to meet in a dark alley?

| The godfathers of metal suggests that one band started everything. Not the case. Metal as we know it started with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Zepplin, Sabbath may have been around but they only scratched the musical surface. Start with Deep Purple, branch that off to Rainbow, bring in Ronny James Dio, sprinkle in some early Judas Preist and UFO and a little Motorhead and there you have the base recipe for 30 years of solid metal. From that sprouted Samson (first NWOBHM band?), Saxon, Angel Witch, Maiden, Def Leppard (listen to their first album! A classic!) along with others. Then a European kid named Lars starts a band called Metallica that grows from that tradition and boom, you have the San Francisco Bay thrash scene. Exodus (Kirk Hammet) and Testament among others spawned from that scene also. There is your base for metal folks, not one band can be the root for it. |
