| Wow! I haven't been so shocked by the news since 9/11. This is a real disappointment. I think he gave a lot of people an appreciation of nature and tried to de-vilify dangerous animals by showing how they're using their hunting instincts just to survive. |

| Even though there is a lot of heavy sh*t going on in the world; I teared up a bit after hearing this- God bless him and his family, not to mention Australia has lost quite a gem!! |

I think its mostly because we've all seen his shows where he was doing so many of the most ridiculous taunting of dangerous animals that we've ever seen.
Every episode you'd swear it was his last. But knowing its on film, you just disregarded it. |

Thats true but you could never have accused him of cruelty. It was always obvious he respected and loved the animals he was interracting with. You can't deny wild animals their instincts, nor blame them for them. Long may there be dangerous animals to make the world a more interesting place. |

FYI Irwin's producer is on Larry King Live talking about what happened.
They just played a clip of Steve Irwin when his daughter helped him tied a crock. Then when they were on the boat with the crock she said, "That's my daddy alright." How sad.... |

He was a television spectacle. Instead of the packaged "reality" of some shows, Irwin dealt in the suspense of handling dangerous animals. But as audacious as he was, he had a compelling purpose. He wasn't eating bugs in the name of upping television's gross-out factor. And in the midst of popular culture's many jaded, sulking, too-thin celebrities, Irwin was an over-the-top enthusiast. In one way or another, he was always saying, "Look at this!" It was a great message for children and teenagers: that the world is full of amazing things that deserve attention and excitement.
At times, some of his daredevil tactics seemed ill-advised. Exhibit A was holding his infant in one hand while feeding a crocodile with the other. The tragic irony is that he died on Monday while swimming with stingrays off the coast of Australia, an activity that was fairly safe in his terms, since stingray attacks are exceedingly rare according to marine biologists. But Irwin was shooting a documentary, so the cause of death was caught on film. He lived long enough to pull the stingray's barb out of his chest. His team rushed him to medical help, but to no avail. He leaves his wife, Terri, and two children.
In this loss, there is a message sad but somehow still Irwinesque that nature is powerful and unpredictable, and that death is real, even for television stars with flourishing careers.
If he could, Irwin might say something outrageous, but still apt, about his own death. It might be his trademark, "Crikey!" uttered after close or harrowing animal encounters. And in that word would be a celebration of the tremendous power that one quirky, hyperkinetic individual has to affect how others see the world.
The Discovery Channel will run marathons of Irwin's shows and set up a fund in his honor. But perhaps the best memorial that one might make to Irwin is to keep reading the crocodile handbook, because even in the face of danger and death, exuberance can triumph. |

This is a poem sent to me today by a girlfriend back in Queensland. The author Rupert McCall is local poet:
THE CROCODILES ARE CRYING
Endless visions fill my head � this man � as large as life
And instantly my heart mourns for his angels and his wife
Because the way I see Steve Irwin � just put everything aside
It comes back to his family � it comes back to his pride
His animals inclusive � Crikey � light the place with love!
Shine his star with everything he fought to rise above
The crazy-man of Khaki from the day he left the pouch
Living out his dream and in that classic �Stevo� crouch
Exploding forth with character and redefining cheek
It�s one thing to be honoured as a champion unique
It�s one thing to have microphones and spotlight cameras shoved
It�s another to be taken in and genuinely loved
But that was where he had it right � I guess he always knew
From his fathers� modest reptile park and then Australia Zoo
We cringed at times and shook our heads � but true to natures call
There was something very Irwin in the make up of us all
Yes the more I care to think of it � the more he had it right
If you�re going to make a difference � make it big and make it bright!
Yes - he was a lunatic! Yes - he went head first!
But he made the world feel happy with his energetic burst
A world so large and loyal that it�s hard to comprehend
I doubt we truly count the warmth until life meets an end
To count it now I say a prayer with words of inspiration
May the spotlight shine forever on his dream for conservation
�My daughter broke the news to me � my six year old in tears
It was like she�d just turned old enough to show her honest fears
I tried to make some sense of it but whilst her Dad was trying
His little girl explained it best�she said �The crocodiles are crying�
Their best mate�s up in heaven now � the crocs up there are smiling!
And as sure as flowers, poems and cards and memories are piling
As sure as we�ll continue with the trademarks of his spiel
Of all the tributes worthy � he was rough�but he was real
As sure as �Crikey!� fills the sky
