VLC does play everything, but the sound quality isn't great if you don't use AC97.

I started using COMODO firewall recently (just out of curiosity, really).

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

PC-Clean, gets rid of Korean spyware for free. Easy to figure out, lots of tools. Other similar Korean programs charge money everytime you want to clean your harddrive.

There's even an English language version now. Download the English version to get a feel for the program, delete and install the Korean version. The Korean version is updated regularly...and it looks like the English version isn't. I just checked the English version and the block list is smaller in that version.

In keeping with Korean "free" software, I'm sure it's bundled with a trojan and adware.

I'm aware that there is a Korean-made trojan called 'netpia', but I don't think Netpia, the maker of PC-Clean, has anything to do with it. It was probably named that way to fool the users of Netpia's software into not deleting it. In any case, I always scan my system with spybot and adaware after downloading free software, including PC-Clean.

PS. Korean freeware 'PC Doctor' is a ressources hog, and not easy to get rid of (mother-in-law downloaded it by accident).

Its funny how no one mentions QT.

Most sane people have been scared of Quicktime since it came bundled with iTunes. Crapware.

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

No iTunes anymore. Select the option.

Not to mention that there is a freeware program called QuickTime Alternative that does everything that QT does, without all of the bloatware.

Huh? Can you explain? As far as I know AC '97 is VIA's integrated sound solution...

Apolgies if this has already been mentioned - I didn't want to wade through five pages of posts.

It seems silly to run so many free applications when I'm assuming that 99% of the people who posted run Windoze (except the OP who clearly uses/used Linux/Mac).

My point is ditch windows. It is truly a crap operating system. I first ran a dual-boot system with Linux and then finally ditched windows ages ago. No more viruses, spyware, adware and any-other-ware that windoze users have to deal with on a daily basis.

This is a timely post. A mate bought his laptop round to mine today and I had to reinstall windoze for him as it was running like treacle, e.g slow as you like.

Linux distributions such as Suse, Mandriva and Ubuntu are all geared to people who are used to working with windows. If you're using free applications - most probably cos you know they're better than their propriety counterparts - then use a free operating system !!

I run Arch Linux. And yes, it's the mutts nuts.

Sorry - *2 cents*.

I've had trouble with VLC when I use a sound card instead of AC97. Sound problems go away when I switch to Media Player.

Rolling Eyes

Don't you people get sick of yourselves? Do you think you are opening eyes or bringing light to the dim masses? Linux is probably older than you.

Tired of this crap again and again...it's the "Western women vs. Korean women" of the tech forum.

A linux system has as much personality as a VAX machine. As a former unix/linux and vax user, I can say there is nothing as versatile and as lasting as the Windows platform.

Quicknote. I use this daily and can't imagine living without it.

From the website:

Often you do not need an advanced text processor but a virtual scrapbook to quickly write down an occasional thought, a plan for the day or an Internet URL. With a plain text editor, which can be used for this purpose, you have to run the program first, then create a new file, then type a line or two and save the file. Too many things to do in order to simply write down a thought? With Quicknote, it does not matter which programs you are currently using; whenever you want to write something down that comes to mind, just 'wake up' Quicknote by touching a small line on the top of your screen with the mouse or by pressing shortcut keys. In its resizable window you can jot down your notes and organize them in categories or even sketch small drawings.
Still, this tiny tool has more possibilities than it seems on the first thought! Beneath the normal text functions, it can convert units, let you directly access frequently run programs, encrypt secret texts, change the system volume by hotkeys, manage windows tasks, and even send notes through a network. It has also a powerful reminding tool, which can remind you of your notes at certain times, run programs or shutdown automatically your PC. The program is absolutely free, so download this handy tool today and concentrate on content rather than form.

From me again:
I don't use most of the other utilities; I don't have much need for them. But for calling up a quick scratchpad without moving from the keyboard...it's great.
http://www.quicknote.de/

I love the idea of this.
I was able to download & use for 5 secs, before some a runtime error came up. It wouldn't open again.
Is there something I am doing wrong?

I like http://www.emuasylum.com/ for games.

You can download ROM files for many different systems and the emulator progs too. Like NES, Super Nintendo and Sega games? It's all here.

Another good freeware is Utorrent to download movies, tv shows, music, games, and even books. I usually download off of www.mininova.org It uses a peer to peer kind of file share system where individuals seed the files and at times, can be difficult to download if no one is seeding which is NOT a problem most of the time.

More than enough entertainment in the 2 sites mentioned above.

a lot of overlap but two good sites to find a more organized summary of a lot of freeware programs are:
http://theopencd.org
http://www.pricelessware.org

in particular, i usually have most of programs listed in the former site, installed on my computer.

CDex - to put a file extension of wav sound onto mp3's to embed your MP3's into your powerpoint. Usually only can embed huge wav files as audio for ppt. But CDex just gives you an extra file the same size as your original with the different name extension.
