I'm actually going with my best friend to Thailand to get a TESOL Cert before Korea. We are done on August 13th. |
Isn't there a cut-off point of August 1st for any TESOL qualifications to qualify for the Korea pay scale bump?
As it's something I considered getting, but found it difficult to get on a course that took place during June/July. |
So the reason they want you to finish by August 1 is that they want you to have the actual certificate with you when you land in Korea for orientation and all. If you take it online, they mail it to you so if you hypothetically finish it on Aug. 1st, you'd have ample time to receive the certificate in the mail before you head out.
So, Aug. 1st is a provisional date.
Oh, and I'm in the same boat as you except it's required for me to hit the 100 hours (SMOE). So I had to sign a form saying I'll promise to finish it before I get there. I think you should ask whether you need to sign a similar form since you may have originally applied not intending to finish the 100 hour course? Just saying so you don't show up and ask for more pay that they hadn't anticipated. |

Hi all,
What's the longest you know of that someone had to wait to hear back from EPIK after the interview? Either positive or negative?
I know they're crazy busy right now, but it's been 10 days now and no word from my recruiter. I'm starting to think it's a pretty bad sign since most people seem to get almost immediate responses.
I also have a friend who is going through EPIK whose application was sent to EPIK by the recruiter over a week and a half ago and she hasn't heard about an interview yet. Are they still giving interviews? I figured I was among the last ones based on what I've been reading here. |

I think I recall seeing someone say they passed their interview, a week after their interview. I can't confirm that though.
It is quite late though and they're presumably also going through the documents they're receiving to send them on, so that could be it.

Hm... that's a good question. I have no idea. I was just told that we needed to bring our certificates to orientation. Who did you hear about it needing to be done by Aug. 1st?
Well regardless, I'm an English major, so it's the same pay grade regardless if I have the certification or not. But if I wasn't an English major, I'd def. do the course if I was able to get the extra money! |

I was waiting a week exactly. They will let you know one way or another. Now that the documents from the first wave of applicants are piling up and need to be assessed as well as what seems to be a second wave of applicants competing for phone interviews... and the fact that they have the 300 SMOE places to sort out this year too... I don't want to imagine what the EPIK office is like right now. |

Here's my brief 3 part response (or is it 4?):
It took 8 days before I got my post interview response.
I'm not sure where I heard/read about the August 1st cut-off date for 'TESOL cert'. Maybe it was via a recruiter, as in the EPIK application notes it just says 'before orientation'.
I wonder how many people are working at the EPIK office. |

yikes, after skimming this thread I wonder if I should even bother finishing my application... I will, anyway, apply this week if I can get my letters of rec in order.
just for fun, anyone want to take a guess on my chances of getting a job if I'm applying (directly) right now? I'm 23, male, American, and currently working at a big hakwon in Seoul where I'll be finishing my contract in August. Does it even count that I'm here and have a year experience? They seem to be pretty insistent that their hiring is first-come, first-serve. |

I notice you mentioned that there were 300 positions in Seoul. The information that we've received recently indicates that that number is no longer accurate.
More teachers are renewing their contracts than projected (who wants to return home when there are no jobs?), internal EPIK teachers shifting to Seoul or Jeju for the upcoming year, and perhaps some Ministries aren't expanding the number of positions from previous semesters, so there are fewer positions than initially indicated. Keep in mind that the reasons for the shift in numbers is just my own speculation.
The information that we have available to us is this:
Seoul - 180
Busan - 36
Daegu - 77
Incheon - 12
Gwangju - 12
Daejeon - 37
Ulsan - 27
Gyeonggi - 12
Gangwon - 59
Chungbuk - 24
Chungnam - 0
Jeonbuk - 2
Gyeongbuk - 40
Gyeongnam - 7
Jeju - 18 |

Sounds like last year's SMOE debacle could easily go national this summer <sigh> And just when I was starting to get a little confident again. Will, if you could shed any light on the first-come first-served system and whether it's still in effect this year, I think a lot of neurotic EPIK applicants would appreciate knowing what's going on. |

I think after last years mess-up (or whenever it was) I have no confidence in EPIK/SMOE.
Seriously...why would you take a job not knowing which area you will be in (yes there is an element of adventure) and not knowing which school you'll be at? |

Hi, I'm new to Daves and have been reading through this thread. Congratulations to everyone who passed the interview and good luck to those who are still waiting!!
I'm wanting to apply for EPIK this time round but like others I'm afraid it's rather late, I want to be in a city rather than a rural area and I've only e-mailed my referees today so probably won't even be able to send my stuff off for another week or two.
If I'm too late for Epik I'm going to look at Hagwons so I figured I might as well get my documents sorted for my Visa anyway.
I'm from the UK and just wondered if anyone knew about how to get a CRB check? Because on the website it says you need to do it for an employer. I've got a job at a summer school in July and they said they'd do one for me, but not until they've received my references, and by then it might be too late. So does anyone know how I get one myself?
Also, the application form asks for my GPA, which we don't have in the UK, do you think I'm alright to just put my grade, I got a 2.1?
And I know I'm full of questions but again, does anyone know how I go about getting my documents apostilled in the UK. I've tried to do a search but it didn't work so I'm sorry if someones already mentioned all this!
Thanks to anyone who can help me! xxx |

You can leave the "Commonwealth method" of 1:1, 2:1 etc on the application form. Just make sure your recruiter and/or EPIK are aware that's what it is and not, for example, a 2.1 GPA because there's quite a difference! |

Go through disclosure scotland or get a subject access check through your police station (they can give you the info). Then you have to send it to the FCO if from the police station. If your CBC is from Disclosure scotland you need it notarised by them before sending it off to the FCO.
Get a lawyer or soc to notarise your degree and then send it to the FCO.
Yes just put in 2.1 for your GPA. |
