| In light of recent threads I've decided that the best rock 'n' roll song is the Ramones "Jackie Is A Sock." |

| The Beatles rocked, period. Nearly everyone that came after (including the Stones) jacked their style. They were a self-made band and knew their *beep* better than most. They weren't faking it, they were the most bad ass band of the bunch (despite their initial 'cute' image). |
Hold on, let me turn down "Yellow Submarine" long enough to collect my thoughts and respond. It's hard to think straight in the face of such a raucous assault on propriety.
Cheap shot aside, I think you're right. There's no such thing as hyperbole when talking about the greatness and importance of The Beatles. I wouldn't trade them for anyone, given one band to listen to the rest of my days. They're the Shakespeare of pop/rock. They had their precursors and influences and outdid them all. In turn, they influenced everyone who came after and were outdone by none.
BUT, what if we include elements of sex and danger in the definition of rock in our quest for the greatest rock song? "I Want to Hold Your Hand" vs. "Satisfaction"? Please. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" vs. MC5's "Ramblin' Rose"? Get outta here.
Obviously my choice of songs is calculated, but take The White Album. There are parts that rock harder than anything The Beatles ever recorded, but the Stones' Beggar's Banquet came out the same year and, while there's no "Helter Skelter" to be found, songs like "Street Fighting Man" and "Stray Cat Blues" get me in the guts and the groin in a way nothing by The Beatles does.
Whaddya think? Are sex and danger necessary ingredients for rock? Is my definition too narrow? I consider rock a genre of pop, and think of The Beatles as the best pop band ever, who excelled at playing rock when they wanted to. They weren't a wimpy rock band, they were just bigger than rock. |
Yeah, I basically hear ya - I personally think the Stones at their peak (i.e. I would say Let it Bleed to Exile) did rock harder, but this was later on. But I think anything pre-Mick Taylor era wasn't all that revolutionary compared to what the Beatles were up to. If you listen to earlier stuff on Aftermath or Decembers Children, a lot of the songs were pretty melo (blues, R&B, pop), with some obvious exceptions (like Satisfaction, Paint it Black, and others). What the Stones did have all along was the bad boy image, which is cool (but it was just marketing to an extent). But it was the John Lennon and the Beatles who strong armed their way into the industry first, paving the way for the rest. You can even find interviews with Keith Richards giving the Beatles this credit.
I think the real debauched sex and drugs phase came a bit later once the 70's hit. Begger's Banquet got them into the new direction (but really, while a great album, the only really hard rocking song on there is Street Fighting Man (one of the first open tuned ones Keith wrote), and maybe Stray Cat Blues), but once Let it Bleed came out, they pretty well changed their whole sound, for the better. The Beatles had already disbanded by the time Sticky Fingers came out. That's when Keith started using more open tunings (like on Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me Knocking etc), and Jagger really turned into a maniac on stage, and they just really kicked ass. Exile was amazing too.
But I dunno, I think in the early days they rode on the Beatles' coat tails to a fair extent. Like Satanic Majesty's Reqest was Sergeant Pepper's, for example. You can find post break-up inteviews where John Lennon grumbles over how jealous Jagger was, despite their always having followed the Beatles' trends. I think there's a certain element of truth there.
But whatever. Both bands were great, at the end of the day it's kind of pointless comparing them too much.

| I've read that the Beatles were influenced by the Pet Sounds Album by the Beach Boys: (Back in the USSR is an obvious 'play' on California Girls). Jagger also had a reputation for plagiarising many other musical styles, from all over. |

McCartney admitted this in countless interviews, adding his admiration for the quality of the songwriting as well as the studio production.
Disagree about the White Album; overrated in the extreme. |

Green Day ripped off The Stiff Little Fingers and The Buzzcocks
Wasted Life by The Stiff Little Fingers would have been a better choice. |

The other reference for Back in the USSR is Chuck Berry's Back in the USA. Take a look at the first verse:
| Quote: |
Oh well, oh well, I feel so good today,
We touched ground on an international runway
Jet propelled back home, from over the seas to the U. S. A.

I remember the Linda Ronsadt version of 'Back in the USA'
Birthday by the Beatles, is another of their more 'rocky', uptempo numbers. |

California Girls wasn't on Pet Sounds, but yeah, Pet Sounds and the Beach Boys generally influenced the Beatles, but don't go nuts with the notion: Pet Sounds was released in 1966 when the Beatles were already too big to tour and became a studio band. Subsequent albums - Revolver, Pepper, Abbey Rd, White Album, Let it Be - show little if any resemblance to the style of the Beach Boys.

Doesn't matter.

True, Axel, but then there's this:
The real catalyst for Pet Sounds was the US version of The Beatles' new LP Rubber Soul, which was released in December 1965. Wilson later recalled his first impressions of the groundbreaking album:
I really wasn't quite ready for the unity. It felt like it all belonged together. Rubber Soul was a collection of songs ... that somehow went together like no album ever made before, and I was very impressed. I said, "That's it. I really am challenged to do a great album."
And he did!
Also from Wiki:
'McCartney stated that:
It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ... I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album ... I love the orchestra, the arrangements ... it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century ... but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways ... "
The Beatles, for example, have said that Pet Sounds was a major influence on their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Paul McCartney has repeatedly named it as one of his favorite albums (with "God Only Knows" as his favorite song) completing a circle begun by the Beatles' influence on Wilson (see "the beginning of Pet Sounds", above). |

i don't like mondays - the boomtown rats
the silicon chip inside her head
gets switched to overload
and nobodys gonna go to school today
shes gonna make them stay at home
and daddy doesnt understand it
he always said she was good as gold
and he can see no reason
'cause there are no reasons
what reason do you need to be shown
tell me why
i dont like mondays
tell me why
i dont like mondays
i dont like
i dont like
i dont like mondays
tell me why
i dont like mondays
i want to shoot
the whole day down
down, down, shoot it all down
all the playings stopped in the playground now
she wants to play with her toys awhile
and schools out early and soon well be learning
that the lesson today is how to die
and then the bullhorn crackles
and the captain tackles
with the problems and the hows and whys
and he can see no reasons
coz there are no reasons
what reason do you need to die, die, die
and silicon chip inside her head
gets switched to overload
and nobodys gonna go to school today
shes gonna make them stay at home
and daddy doesnt understand it
he always said she was good as gold
and he can see no reason
'cause there are no reasons
what reason do you need to be shown, shown, own, own...
tell me why
i dont like mondays
tell me why
i dont like mondays
i dont like
i dont like
i dont like mondays
tell me why
i dont like mondays
tell me why
i dont like mondays
i dont like
i dont like
i dont like mondays
i dont like mondays
i want to shoot
the whole day down
whole day
whole day
whole day

| What happened at VT ain't cool. That's the theme of the song, even though it isn't specifically about VT, & predates it. |
