the zune player is nice, but the software is not as good as ipod. My dad got one for Christmas and I was helping him with it and there is a sad lack of drag and drop ability from file folders into the program and onto the player for that matter. It simply tries to do too much for me compared to itunes, which although can be a leach and a suck in terms of memory and space is still better. Personally though I miss the original 40 gig iRivers before they were burdened with all that windows play for sure nonsense.

I've got an Ipod Touch 2nd Generation and it is easily the coolest gadget I've ever had. I'm not picky about sound quality. It sounds great to me. The video playback is great. What I like most about it are the applications you can download from the Itunes store. On my little Ipod Touch I have about twenty games, a subway map, a calendar, weather, note taker, and loads of other fun/useful applications.

I bought the 32gig version which set me back $400. Having said that, if I lost mine today I'd buy another tomorrow. Incredibly handy and fun.

I'm curious what you mean by this. I have the latest version of itunes on my computer and I haven't experienced anything I would describe as "taking over" my computer. If I were to guess, I would say you let itunes associate itself with certain file types, but this is no different than what any other media player program does upon installation (if you don't deselect the file types manually.) Also, it's quite easy to change the file association to the media player of your choice. To be honest, it seems like a non-issue to me.

However, with that said, you CAN use different programs with ipods if you so desire, and bypass itunes alogether.

Has anyone tried Songbird? It's supposed to be a decent ITunes replacement. I've never had trouble with Itunes thus far...

Basically itunes keeps on "misplacing" my music in my computer, so anytime I want to play a song I have to go into my computer and find it. Mind you, I have reinstalled itunes many times and it still cannot find my music. I have even taken my entire library off my computer multiple times, and it will recognize it for one day and then go back to losing it.

Also, I cannot play music files in other media programs, ie. windows media player. I go to my control panel and change which programs should run when playing music files, and even if I open music that is not associated with itunes, it will open it there anyway. I have "told" my control panel multiple times that I want windows media player to be the default program, but itunes still opens the music.

I hear what you wrote about rockbox and programs like that. I'll play around with it this week and see how I feel.

I spent three hours at Yongsan and ended up buying an FX8000...from a Korean brand called Ace Labs for 130,000 won. 8 GB with expandable memory slot. Music, movies, reads text, world radio, voice recorder. Has one game, which I am a little miffed about. I don't know if I could add more. I'm not sure if I am happy yet, but I wasn't really happy with anything I saw and just sort of settled on this because it fit all but one of my requirements.
