I worked for the feds after I was laid off from Prudential Property & Casualty (sold to Liberty Mutual).

Unless you are a physician/dentist (MD or DDS), Aviator or in the hard sciences, white males need not apply. Federal Jobs in the U.S. and here in Korea are a kind of Jobs Program that artificially place people in the middle or upper middle class. I'm not saying that all are affirmative action hires- key people here and in the states are highly qualified. Just that a significant number if not the majority are hired under affirmative action laws.

Why should having graduated in New York City specifically entitle you to extra points on an exam meant to test for qualification? If you have to do nonsense like this to "increase diversity" then it seems to me maybe increasing diversity in the fire fighting department is not in the city's best interests.

You don't think it can be justified that a city favor its own otherwise qualified residents in hiring?

That's not what's being suggested, though. What's being suggested is that, during a exam for promotion, people who were educated in New York City should receive a substantial advantage.

I can understand favoring people all ready living in your city in hiring. I cannot see favoring people who were incidentally educated in your city years ago for promotion. Unless, that is, your goal is to give minorities an unfair advantage in promotional exams (which is, in fact, the goal of the individual proposing this).

Isn't "the open competitive firefighter exam" the one to get hired?

I didn't read the article carefully enough, it does in fact appear to be the exam for hiring rather than for promotion; I guess my mind was still on the previous topic regarding the Connecticut promotional exam. I apologize for the misunderstanding, you were correct.

Perhaps because the school gets higher funding?

Who wouldn't hire someone in the knowledge that the government will pay half the salary.
