Race is an ideological construct that exists to support inequality. ... So, yes, race exists the same way a lie exists.
The media and education system is pretty much designed to propagate that crap. ... Everyone believes the lie.
|
If you majored in anthropology you've probably heard of forensic anthropology, and you know that one can identify a skeleton's race without difficulty.
Of course race exists. Being aware of that is natural. 'Colourblindness' and 'diversity' and forced integration are the unnatural social constructions. And if you think that the education system or the media is propagating racism you're tilting at windmills. It's kind of funny actually, that the white supremacists on stormfront say government institutions are doing the opposite of what you say they're doing. What is the status quo, these days? It's not what it was 30, 40, 50 years ago. |
Yes, they can determine a lot of facts about a person's skeleton. But not all those facts elicit much about a person’s identity. The color of a person's skin should be as pertinent as eye color or hair color. Despite a good deal of money going to socio-biologists to prove otherwise, race alone will not affect behavior. |
You've now admitted that race exists, though you maintain that it's not important on its own.
What about people who feel that their race is a major part of their identity? Again, this is most people besides university educated whites. I suppose you would tell the black students in that school that their identity is a lie. Why should they want to study other blacks, after all? They have nothing in common besides skin colour. (And skeletal structure.) |
Race is a cultural construct; otherwise inconsequential phenotypes made significant by the cultural emphasis we place on them. Hey, I all had your back with the race does exist! Anthropology major here, I'm all about the cultural constructs- give them life!!
University educated whites had better go back to school if they don't feel their race makes up a good deal of their identity, too. Or go to a different school.
So far I've said race not only exists, but the concept is propagated by a society whose elite members benefit from alienation between races. Clearly all about the existence of race behind that one. Integration is necessary to combat the inequality that the elite in our society benefit from. Is it going to work? Maybe. Does it matter? Not really. If racism goes away some other ism will take its place and work just as well. Watching more buffy. |

Just started this topic by pointing out that all members of this forum (I guess not counting you) are racist. Not the best thing to put in the first post of a thread. |

Hmm, if the kiddies of Dave's can't handle anything other than sugarcoated pat on the backs from each other, then that's a problem. I'm not perfect, but after three years on this board, it gets tiresome to read the same crap. I posted this for discussion, and it's disappointing that all some people can do is point fingers and say "troll!" when they think it's a topic that could be brought against them. If we are all so quick to share our rants about racism here in Korea, why is it so bad to discuss racism in other parts of the world? Why is okay to have pages and pages blasting the same thing, but my topic is automatically that of a "troll."
If being a "troll" means someone willing to see both sides, then sure, I'm a troll. I'd rather be that than be on the same page of some of you. |

I'm going to repeat something I said previously in order to clarify. Let's use two immediately relevant definitions of race:
race (1): traditional divisions of humankind - actual, real divisions (doesn't exist)
race (2): a group of persons related by common descent or heredity (exists)
And moreover, can race (2) give rise to certain behaviors (albeit learned rather than inherent)? Yes, pretty sure they can, but there's nothing 'racial' (pertaining to the descent/heredity itself) about it.
Regarding what to do about racial prejudice, I shall copy and paste something I wrote in another thread:

From this book

The major landmarks of the civil rights revolution have often been credited with the economic advances of the US black population. But history tells a very different story as regards the economic advancement of blacks.
The percentage of black families with incomes below the poverty line fell most sharply between 1940 and 1960, before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and well before the 1970s when "affirmative action" evolved into "goals" or "quotas". While the downward trend in poverty continued, the pace of that decline in fact slackened. However much credit has been claimed for the civil rights laws of the 1960s or the War on Poverty programs of that decade, the hard facts show that blacks' rise out of poverty was more dramatic before any of these government actions got under way |
As someone else said earlier in the thread, progress overwhelmingly comes from free market economics - policies that "progressives" tend not to admire. Passing laws costs politicians nothing, but discrimination against blacks, women or anyone will cost competitive private businesses, in competition with other businesses for labor, money. |

| Lol instead of hijacking the thread into a back and forth argument and attempt at oneupmanship, why not pm each other or just - give up... you're not going to convert each other to the other's point of view, so what's the point...? |

I notice Korea has a bunch of backwards swastikas and use of the number 88
Plus with all the xenophobia and 'racism'...
I see it now...Korea is where Hitler will be resurrected by some sort of Alien/Ancient Egyptian artifact and merge his powers with Some Ancient Dead Korean Emperor...All that stands between them and world domination is Brendan Fraser, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Han from Fast & Furious, and some old goofy British professor, probably played by Ian Holm or Derek Jacobi.
Stormfront needs to move its headquarters over here, they're missing out on the 'party'. Plus Hitler's new army needs some muscle to shoot and miss at Brendan Fraser. |

Alright. Let's make a deal.
You provide, Mr. Marxist, a sufficient explanation as to why Marx was unable to reconcile the labour theory of value and thus finish Das Capital and I'll keep my reality based comments to myself.
Surely, your anthro prof covered this. |
Loaded question. etc etc etc |
No, it isn't. He spent 20 years trying to figure it out and was unable. The labour theory of value is central in Capital.

I know, right? Commies killed tens of millions out of love, Hitler did it out of hate. All the while commies stood by their mannnn... Meanwhile, liberal market democracies have built the most affluent societies on earth where even the poor can be fat. But the economy sucks now, so best throw it all in the trash. |
I don't think Hitler killed out of hate at all. I think he killed out of love. Love for his own people. He viewed Jews (right ot wrong is another debate) as a disease that needed to be eradicated for the protection and advancement of the German people (again this is widely debatable in its essence) thus he attempted to kill them all in an effort to rid German society of an endemic disease (again entirely debatable).
Read Mein Kampf, he spells it all out pretty clearly there. |

Simply not true. Depends on the user and length of use, and I guess other factors.
Sometimes 6 beers get me drunk. Other times, not so much. Is that a reasonable analogy? Maybe not. Who cares?

It's not even a "white" issue because uh, I'm pretty damn white. It's more of an issue on maturity. Most of my white friends are really open-minded about this kind of thing so they can talk about it without getting in a huff or name calling. And yet I've hung out with other people in Korea (friends of friends) who have said stuff like "he didn't seem like your average black person because he didn't like rap and didn't talk about just hoes and money" and "I'd be scared if I were alone with a black person at night" (I kid you not). Gross. |

Perhaps there would have been a much better reaction to this thread if the OP had not bacically said things that could have called for this as the title of the thread,: ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF DAVE'S CAFE ARE RACIST EXCEPT ME- LET'S TALK ABOUT IT.

Clearly I didn't and clearly I'm not. What's with the exaggerations? Racism is always a hot topic on Dave's. Stormfront is a freakishly fascinating forum (horray for alliteration). Many teachers have a lot of time to kill since exam season is over. Discussions would be interesting, although ones that just go "troll" are very lame and uninteresting. What exactly is your beef with this topic? |
