I always make a lot more money in Japan and Korea because I enjoy meeting people, gaining new contacts and doing things that will help me settle down. Every once in a while I have a stint back home for a few months and I only make a little bit during that time.
Basically my mind is elsewhere...if I felt like living where I grew up I'm sure I could make as much money as I wanted at an oil company downtown but that looks about as attractive as the winter we're having right now.
-19. Did I mention I'm back in six days? Very Happy

In my first two years in Korea, I wiped out my student loan, bought a house in Canada (which is now rented out and paying for itself) all the while living a good life here. Since I wiped out my debts, me and my wife are saving a lot, traveling twice a year and have no money worries. She works and that has only improved our finances further, well she is not working now as she is 6 months pregnant!

Homer, I want to buy a house as well or a Condo in Dayton beach Florida. How has this investment worked out for you if you do not mind me asking? Did you use a property managing company?

Furthermore since everyone is talking about saving money? What does everyone plan on doing with all of his or her savings? I am just curious!!

JongnoGuru, I am considering a similar 10-year plan but I think I will try to buy some real state property. I have been doing some figuring and think that I could produce for myself a nice $3,000-4,500 a month side income in 10 years. If I could save $2,000 a month and use the income from the rental properties, I could probably have two house paid for in 10 years. My real question since I am going to be getting started in 11 months after I finish my MA. Can an ex-pat stand to live in Korea for 10 years!!! I have live in Germany before fro 1 and 1/2 years. So I have some experience living abroad but Asia is a completly different culture.

The real estate thing seems easy but most people forget to take into account the property taxes which can amount to thousands per year, especially on second or rental properties. And then there is the maintenance. When your roof goes or pipes burst that will cost you thousands. And then you have to deal with the renters (lost income too if no one rents). Who will manage that? You either have to been there and in charge or pay someone to do it.

Another thing to consider. You can save more here right from the starting gate. BUT--and this is a big but--everybody at home is advancing up the ladder. And ESL tends to plateau out very early on. Teachers can make $40-50,000 after a few years at home. And more. They get retirement benefits etc etc etc. So if anybody's plan is to stay ten years I say you better be banking more than a thousand a month. Because the future is not so bright for ESL teachers who go back in their late 30s with no experience that is looked upon as valuable and having to start from scratch.

Of course, you could stay in ESL forever. But I don't know how ESL will treat us in our old age.

My biggest gripe with Korea and ESL in general is that experience and everything else count for shit in terms of pay (an extra 100,000 or two . . .so what?). It seems to continually pull a new stream of backpackers in, and employers are happy with that, and at the same time they complain that we ESL teachers are so unprofessional ala English Spectrum. But that's because employers do nothing to keep the professionals in.

Summation: you have to compare what you are making now with what you made at home, but you also have to compare what you would have made had you stayed at home and gotten into a career with what you will make in ESL.

here i am earning about one third of what i earned in papua new guinea before coming here. that is taking into account housing. my png job provided me with a large three bedroom apartment overlooking a beach and with a swimming pool. prior to the devaluation of the kina i was earning about 5 times what i earn here.

but - i am not being shot at or stabbed. that is a big plus...
