Yeah, he's embarrassed to say, pretty much. He's probably from Detroit or maybe some place like Jackson, Mississippi.

Hey man, don't knock the D.

Plus my ex-roomate a firefighter in the D, went to J-State for Uni and said if the place has anything, it had one of the view burger joints that delivered during the 90s (now in the 2000s there are more places that deliver a burger. And the fries stayed crispy. They have to be onto something magical down there to get that to happen.

Amen.

Saying that S. Korea is the worst place to which you've ever been says a lot about how much you know about the world.

It's really not so bad.

I lived in Cairo on two seperate ocassions, I liked it a lot. But, yes If you're female and a westerner you can certainly get hassled.

I worked back home at an afterschool/holiday programme centre in a very poor neighborhood, lot's of gangs both adult and youth. Out of 40 someting young people there were 4 different youth gang affiliations.

Once a 12 yr old girl brought 2 knives to an ice skating outing because another girl had dissed her dads gang the day before. Luckily nothing major happened but there were always tensions and conflicts.

Korean kid's are usually a joy to teach in comparrison

The garbage situation has improved a lot in the last 10 years in korea. About 8 years ago they started to go to paid gov't garbage bags. People didn't want to buy them so they just dumped their garbage in a big pile in public cans. The government took the public garbage cans away which left massive messes of garbage around for quite awhile, until they installed cameras over the worst places to catch people who cheated. That saved a lot of money so they begin taking garbage cans out of the subways too. Of course the excuse was that it was to prevent terrorism and bombings in the subway, but I think they just enjoy having money to spend on other things . At least now we have some garbage cans in the subway , but not many. Fora few years there was nothing.

Canada. I love my city and have no problems living there, but you asked about teaching ESL. Kids who don't care, don't want to learn, elementary school kids who plan to drop out and live on welfare, kids on drugs, parents who don't care, schools where teachers burn out on average within 5 years. Yeah, I'll take teaching here over that.

From a job standpoint, Japan could be much worse than Korea. Just check out "dispatch" companies for public schools, such as Interac. Complaints for the public school system outside of "JET" far outmatch any whining those in EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE do.

Yes, the job market there was hell, and even after the earthquake the jobs on offer pay like 30,000won per hour for part-time if you're lucky, more like in the 20,000's or even teens.

Seriously? I have taught in many countries but I would be interested in teaching there someday. How does one get a job in North Korea?.

The British Council advertise jobs from time to time (well, every couple of years). I believe, but I may be wrong, that only Brits can teach there. The salary range posted the last time a job was advertised there was phenomenal. If I recall correctly, you need to be a certified teacher with at least two years EFL experience.

I was told some American dude from my current uni went up North after finishing here last winter.
