| Why is this thread on American culture mainly about TV shows? If you really want to bash them, talk about the fatties, gun-nuts and religious freaks. |

I guess because the OP complained about American entertainment media - books (who even checks the nationality of the authors they read?), tv, movies....and TV is an easy one to show him he's wrong. Big Brother vs Real World.
i agree that guns, god, and cheeseburgers are more valid complaints about America. |

Yeah, I'm not sure I like that too much either.
I think we Americans, in general, think others care about our "lifestyle choices" more than they really do. I am really not interested in anyone else's religion, political ideas, or diet....but we sure do talk about them a lot. |

Not as a percentage of total population there aren't. The impact such individuals have on overall American culture is quite small (though they may have greater impact on certain local cultures). |

Not complete vegetarians, but more and more have given up on red meat, and don't forget the meatless Monday campaign. It's not a majority yet, but it's a growing movement.
As for the god thing, I know that isn't going to disappear anytime soon. Ah well... |

As I see it, the problem is not that a great deal of Americans worship God (I actually wish that were true). The problem is that certain Americans believe God worships them.
Sarah Palin's recent speech to the NRA was a good example... something along the lines of "America, the exceptional nation... God Bless America..." It's enough already. |

Just a few:
The Office (I know it was originally British, but this version is better)
Breaking Bad
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
David Mamet
Jhumpa Lahiri
We export crap because "lowest denominator" viewers exist everywhere, and that's where the money is, but don't think that that's all there is. |
One show that is lowest common denominator that I'm glad is on the air is 'The Biggest Loser'-if it can provide motivation for even a few people, which I'm sure it does. then the world is a better place.
I have heard that U.S.A is Number One. Is that true? |

#1? It's like saying Korea Fighting! It's just nationalism. Some parts rule, others, not so much. Every country has its pros and cons. I love America, but sometimes I hate some aspects. I'm still very glad that I was born in the states. While many things leave quite a lot to be desired, many others make it totally worth it.
I haven't seen the biggest loser, but I know about it. I'm all for it. There is a big problem (pardon the pun) that we really need to address. Slow foods are the way to go, and moderate activity goes a long way. |

I'm Irish and I can safely say Ireland beats America and England hands down
The Wire is fantastic - if you can't get into it your deficient in something - maybe vitamins or something.
oh yeah and whoever thinks the American office is better than the English one needs dousing with petrol and igniting - it's good but nothing like the real thing
I will say this - American culture for better or worse is totally overhyped - largely by yourselves and the rest of us can tend to confuse being exhuberant about your own country as pissing all over someone elses
ye don't do it the best - look at foreign policy, health care, education - many things that Korea even kicks the crap out of ye guys in.
Britain - no better in my opinion - health care rocks by comparison
Ireland - we've got food and drink down, education rocks - hell i have no student loans (if we could make an economy out of anything like fairy forts and leprechaun farts we'd be away with it !)
These are of course all generalizations and therein lies the biggest problem the real representatives of any country can tend to be as thick as bottled crap types and the masses come across very badly as a result.
I have to admit that since coming to Korea and meeting more and more Americans i have met decent, sound, intelligent people and they, while loving their own country are under no illusions as to why they're here - it ain't all roses at home
edit - leave cheesburgers alone ! |

Edit- ach hell I'll throw this joke in re- "education rocks". All in good fun of course.
Q: What are the two smallest books in history?
A: The book of Italian bravery and the book of Irish knowledge! |

I too prefer the English Office to the American one. The American Office (from what I've seen of it) isn't bad, but the English one captures the awkward humor of life so well that there's really no comparison. |
