Lin Helming Universal's Oldboy
Source: Variety Tuesday, August 3, 2004
Helmer Justin Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) and a team of writers have climbed aboard Universal Pictures' remake of the South Korean film Oldboy, reports Variety. Lin will adapt the film with "Tomorrow" co-writers Ernesto Foronda and Fabian Marquez.
Directed by Park Chan-wook, the original follows a man in his mid-30s who has been kidnapped by unknown captors and held in a room for years. On the 15th anniversary of his capture, he's knocked out and awakens in the middle of a city.
The plot centers on his search to find out who kidnapped him, who's killed his family while he was away, and why.

Justin Lin's the guy who made 'Better Luck Tomorrow' http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0280477 about a group of Asian-American HS students in Los Angeles who are bored with their lives and start doing shady shizzle. I saw the movie a while back. It was just okay. Nothing about the film really intrigued me though.
I don't think Lin would do OldBoy justice. To tell you the truth, I don't think anyone but Park could do OldBoy justice. In fact, why the f*ck are they remaking this masterpiece for?!? Hollywood's watered-down version won't even come close to being as graphic and disturbing as the original... |

*****************SPOILERS*****************
1) The symbolism of the squid scene is totally lost on me. Could someone please explain?
2) If, as was suggested earlier, Woojin looked younger b/c he was living in the past (highschool days), then wouldn't he have looked ALOT younger? ie. closer to his highschool self and not like the 20-something dude? I'm not buying that theory. Don't know what to make of the age difference between Daesu and Woojin.
3) Did anyone else notice in the HS flashback scene where Daesu writes on the blackboard: "Goodbye 3rd grade class..."? 3rd grade?!? He looked pretty old to me. |

I think it nicely shows Daesu's want for revenge. It harkens back to his line about how "nobody will find you, because I will chew every bit down" (poorly translated from the Korean, but I got the jist).
