Me neither and I've worked in Gyeonggi-do and Seoul, haha. I could imagine a Korean PS teacher marrying a foreigner but not an English teacher and ESPECIALLY not the NET at their school. It'd kind of be like marrying the janitor or someone who works in the kitchen.

Not really at all. Our pay is not so bad, plus there are many who are just teaching for a year or two, people who went to good schools. I've met some teachers here from ivy league schools, Some teachers who had decent money, etc.

Korean PS teachers act more like Fighter pilots. They have some stupidly high evaluations of themselves. They don't view most other occupations as being in the same league as them.

Unless you have a respectable job, the parents won't be happy to see their prize daughter marry a hagwon teacher instead of doctors and lawyers.

Yeah. I always get on my kid's backs when they remark about how being a police officer, firefighter or a career soldier is a job where you have to carry around the shame of failure with you. I would much rather do any of those jobs than be a salaryman, without question.

I know starting Korean PS teachers make 2.0 (with no housing like we get). I know Korean teachers at certain hagwons that make near 4.0. Yet the latter isn't respected at all, really. It's a shame because I know some really good teachers at the hagwon and some really awful teachers at the PS.

That's why I don't think teacher training means very much Razz You can either teach or you can't.

I can't speak for firefighters but if you've been around Korean NCOs and Officers, being a professional soldier is a failure. Most people join the military because they have nothing to offer in the competitive civilian world. A Korean military officer(and most NCOs) is a salaryman. They're there to pick up a paycheck, not because of some burning desire to become a warrior and defend their country. It isn't exactly hard to become a professional soldier here. The only expection are military Academy graduates.

I believe there are some great teachers out there who haven't had teacher training. I think teacher training makes 90% of the teachers better teachers. Teacher training is beneficial in most cases as experience is beneficial in most cases. Though, some people will argue this case.

I've met plenty of people who say you don't need training to teach but I've never met anyone who had practical training and said they didn't improve as a result

Dating a Korean woman is a mistake in my opinion. The cultural gap is too wide.

I think people have a better quality of life when they are not under the stress of constant public scrutiny and scorn for being in an interracial relationship in a conservative country like Korea.

Agreed.

My problem is that I'm way too trusting and am very bad at reading people. With a Westerner I kind of know what to look for from experience but with a Korean girl, the cues aren't so obvious and I could find myself in a trap (again).

That and I know what Koreans think of dating, marriage and romance and so on. Real turn off.

I want to give you a few ideas. Please, understand that I am in no way judging you, but rather it's just an assessment from my point of view.

Get honest feedback from people that know you.
Try to talk about what you enjoy doing, instead of what you don't want to do. Use more positive statements to describe who you are. Eg. I enjoy doing, playing....
Go out to a bar and order a soft drink. Mingle and have some fun! Find one that fits your personality~ jazz, mellow, high ceiling so not so smoky, non-smoking, outdoor patio, etc.
Try and get feedback from people. Go through your wardrobe and see if the colors match your eyes, skin-tone, hair color. (Check out the book "Color for Men".)
Try styling your hair differently. Perm it, color it. Go nuts. Smile
Work on your charm. Learn from others.
Smile more. Have fun!!
Check out Meet-ups that interest you.
Think about where you want to be 5 years from now. (It's difficult for ex-pats, as you need to think about if you and a gf. are heading similar directions in a geographical sense.)
Take a moment to ask: Why am I here? What keeps me here? Where do I want to go?
Get out and relax at coffee shops. Have some fun!!
Best of luck to you!!

Please don't take this as my calling you a racist. Its not intended to be. However, white fathers in the south (and other areas for that matter) have made that same argument to their daughters for marrying a black guy. Replace country with 'state' and 'Korea' for Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Missisippi, South Boston, etc.

Two people love each other, they just do. Love is not a choice, you simply fall in love and you can't help who the object of your desire and love is. If the society at large doesn't appreciate that love and they can't handle the stress so be it but I would never suggest to offer that as a reason for someone not to marry another person. Its an obvious issue that both are well aware of. I'd do my part in making it one less person in society they have to worry about.

Great advice. Improve yourself. Its funny sometimes but while you're working on being the best you, you sometimes find that its attractive.
