I've said it before and I'll say it again, could it possibly be because Subway doesn't taste that good? Subway is like the Hires Root Beer of subs. Passable, but is smoked by A&W, Barq's, Jones, IBC, even Mug, and so on.
The core of a good sub is its bread. Subway's bread is absolutely atrocious. Lacking in texture and taste, it is also too voluminous for its content.
To say nothing of the mediocre cheese and cold cuts as well as the processed tasting steak and chicken, yeah mediocre sub.
|
Like I said originally, if that is the case, then why is Subway the most successful fast food franchise in the world? It rakes in more than McDonald's. Japan and Korea are the only two developed countries it's not successful in.
It's the same way with Starbucks, actually. Despite it being extremely popular everywhere else in the world it didn't take off here until recently (in comparison). |

Because its operating costs are much lower than most fast food restaurants. |

I don't know if it has ever been here before, but I think Dairy Queen would be a pretty big hit. Koreans love their ice cream/cakes, and chicken. DQ makes some pretty decent chicken strips and burgers. If they made each branch into a 'cafe' style destination, I can see Korean chicks gettin all dolled up to visit friends there, or to go there to play on their smartphones/smoke cigs on the patio. Adjosshis, despite their cultural literacy , probably wouldn't like it so much, but I think that goes for all fast food joints. The adjosshi just want a place to slam soju, chain smoke and get away from their nagging wife and kids for a few hours. |

I don't think any Korean girls get dolled up to go eat fast food. If some girl were to try to use Dairy Queen as a status symbol she would be laughed at. Unless DQ wants to start charging 20,000 for a sundae...Of course they'd be losing out on the families, which in fast food IS your customer base.
Sounds like one of those posters who claims things like Levi's and Jack Daniel's are big status symbols....maybe back in like 1992, but this is 2011. Things have moved forward and up.
Now if they did DQ like they do back home- a cheap place for under 22s and families to go and have a simple treat, then yeah, it might take off. And if they did that, you'd probably see some ajosshis there having an ice cream after badminton or with their church group. |

Have you never been to a Dunkin Donuts in Korea?
Four Loko, properly marketed, could be turned into a status symbol in Korea. |

or an __________ coffee shop?
Seriously. I see hundreds of young Korean women that doll themselves up mega-glam to sit inthose places for hrs taking photos of themselves with their LV bags etc every weekend, especially in Seoul.... If I had bigger orbs and better korean skills than a guy I used to know (I still cannopt bring myself to approach a Korean using only English off the bat), I'd be approaching a lot of them for dates too..... |

I think you are misinterpreting things. They are already dolled up to begin with. They didn't doll themselves up to go to the coffee shop. Also, they sit in those places to kill time or to meet someone and kill time by taking pictures of themselves. The closest thing to status they are doing is pointing out how they don't have to work and can sit in a coffee shop.
But no, they aren't like "Oh my Ji Min and Hye Jin. I actually got into Dunkin Donuts!!!! I know I know, its so hard to get in, but I'm actually there! And I got one of those fancy 5,000 won coffees!!! I know, 5,000 won is so much money!!!! No one ever gets into Dunkin Donuts!!! Let's all dress up and go to Dunkin Donuts!!!"
Good grief people, get a clue.
Silly old me, I thought 5 million won handbags, Mercedes-Benzes, Top of the line clothes and cosmetics, fancy clubs, and expensive restaurants were status symbols of the gold digger. But I guess its simply Dunkin Donuts.
Do you people actually have contact with these types of people? Do you brag to them that you went to Dunkin Donuts?

Wendy's has gone downhill over the last 10 years. Not really missing it.
Denny's sux. Chili's is barfalicious. Red Robin's Barf & Burp is awful as well. Most sit down chain food is absolutely wretched. Johnny Rockets tastes like bat barf.
I don't hold fast food to the same standard though...
An Arby's or three would be nice.
Godiva Chocolate- Their chocolate isn't THAT great, but they are great/easy gifts to give to people of moderate acquaintance.
White Castle- Absolutely nasty, yet once in a while you get "the crave"
Of the burrito places, I found either Qdoba or Moe's Southwest Grill to be the best...Panchero's wasn't that good but the El Gordo was good in an obnoxious sort of way.
Not really a chain, but a Whole Food's (complete with salad bar and to go buffet) would be awesome...
But I think number one hands down has to be Jimmy John's. |
I shudder to think of how you know what bat barf taste like lol
And has anyone heard of a place called "Valance Burgers" there is one opening up near my house and i wonder if this is a foreign brand coming to korea, or a korean's attempt at trying to hit into the burger market "Mr Big, Krazie Burger, etc" |
It's Korean--valance is supposed to be balance as in balanced diet. That and the fried egg and barbeque sauce they put on their burgers is a dead giveaway.
These upmarket burger places have really caught on. Most are a rip-off, although IMO Mr. Big is pretty good. But they're popularity is probably why Johnny Rockets is coming. I went to one once and that was enough. In and Out would be so much better. |
While that is true for the most part, Valance is AWESOME. The burgers are big, fresh and they use real high quality ground chuck. In addition, they have chilli and great hand cut fries. However, in no way is it healthy food, it is just fresh :p We have had one up here in Nowon for the last few years and it does very well with the foreigners.
What I would like to see in Korea:
1. Bob Evans / Cracker Barrel
2. Quaker Steak and Lube (if breakfest food wasnt so important, this would be number 1)
3. Jimmy Johns |

DQ would have to be like a cross between BR31 and Lotteria if it even has chance at competing in the Korean market. |

I had the cheese-chili fries at Valance. The cheese was cold and the fries never did melt it. No way near great.
Is the chili any good? The only place I've had chili in Korea was the old USO and even there it wasn't any great shakes. |

Now that cool weather is finally here I'd love it if Wendy's would return to Seoul. Ahhh, the memories of the double cheeseburgers and chili I used to get at the COEX Wendys.......................
Would love to see Kenny Rogers Roasters return, too.
And the chain restaurant that was in front of Sejong University (across from Childrens Grand Park). Can't remember the name of it................... |
Why did Wendy's pull out? I would have thought they'd be really popular. Best burger joint out there and a littel healthier than some of the others (though still unhealthy). |
