| I dont particularly like the song, and the dance seems pretty much to be the same one done 20 years ago, but with that said, I just watched a player for the NY Giants do the dance after scoring a TD. When a Korean dude can get folks like that doing their moves, he has arrived. |
Yes, if an American sportsman does a silly dance during a silly game that only Americans play, PSY's video has definitely achieved a certain amount of popularity in America.' Is that what you mean? |

| I wouldn't expect an adult to let an argument about K Pop on an anonymous Internet forum bother him so much he felt the need to send abusive private messages either |
Due to the fact that your post contained a quote from one of my earlier posts I would like it to be known that I am not the poster who has sent the abusive messages.
If you could confirm this edward I would be very grateful. |

Not disputing that PSY is bigger than Beiber and the Kardashian family combined, just having a go at the old big in the US automatically = Big in the whole world argument |

I have to say K-pop and Korean music in general has improved drastically over the past few years. Only five or six years ago, Korean music of all genres was ridiculously awful, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how good some of today's Korean music, including K-pop, is. I'm certainly not a fan of Gangnam Style or B-bring the Boys Out, but a lot of the K-pop some guys were listening to in a couple of different internet cafes over the past month was very enjoyable to hear. All of it had female vocalists and I don't know who they are, but I wish I did. They were good.
I think today's K-pop is actually much better than the pop coming out of the USA these days. I'd probably use the word innovation instead of copying to describe what the Koreans are doing. After all, if K-pop sounded just like Christina Aguilera or Kanye West, I wouldn't want to hear it.
What disappoints me is how American music sucks balls these days when there used to be so many great soul singers, great rock bands, and decent pop acts when I was a kid. It seems like nearly every great American musician is either dead now or wearing Depends. Since my country can no longer produce decent rock or soul, I wish Koreans would try to copy Motown and also 70s and 80s rock. With enough experimentation, I believe some K-bands would come up with the right formula. They could probably make some pretty good funk if they wanted. I was listening to a Korean lady singing piano jazz covers of American rock the other day. I found it by accident and I was totally expecting it to suck, but it was suprisingly good. She was very talented.
I think Koreans can feel proud of the music they're cranking out these days. Just five years ago, I would have never expected to be saying so. They really have come a long way. |

The population of Scotland is upward of 5 million people.
15,000 people is something like .3% of that.
Is there some new statistical math where 'the majority' is not even the majority of 1% of the population? |
I see you didn't mention the other factors that I mentioned in support of the claim that the majority of Scots are proud of Andy Murray.
More people turned out for Andy than for past Queen and Prince visits. Double the population of his hometown turned out to see him.
Every Scot I've talked to have been very proud of him. And the first minister makes a congratulatory message.
Most people would agree it looks like the majority of Scots are proud of Andy. |
You're doing it again.
I realize the point you are making...and you could be right.
A great number of Scottish people are proud of Andy.
However, the words you are using actually do have literal meanings, and when you keep using them as loosely as you are, it tends to detract from your statement.
Sorry to cherry pick on your post...was just using the numbers to demonstrate the point. |

Thats cool, but im pretty sure I never said anything about world fame, or even US fame. I simply made an observation that if the guy has gotten so much play that NFL players are mimicking his dance, then he has gone farther than any Korean artist has in terms of recognition. (not because a player mimicked his dance, but rather because the song has gotten so much attention that the player mimicked his dance) |

I hate being impolite - but I also think you are lazy. If you are seriously 'proud' of Korean music but think western music has declined it tells me that you have not bothered to look outside anything the media has given you. |

Western music has declined.
There aren't any good "movements" in western music. Its just people rehashing the same ideas of 15 years ago.
There is good music in the US. But you really have to dig for it nowadays. All the stuff in the top 100 is pretty much garbage.
K-pop is not too popular to Westerners. But it is HUGE all over Asia. Billions of people love it. They are doing something right. |

To be fair, he was comparing Korean pop and American pop; that's not necessarily Korean music vs. American music.
And really, when it's Pop vs. Pop, can anyone really say Niki Minaj, Gaga, Bieber, etc. are any better or worse than their Korean counterparts?
When it comes to other genres, and/or indie music, I don't think anyone would deny America is better than Korea. |
