Hook, line, and sinker. I hope people posting serious responses are playing along for a chuckle. It's pretty clear what the motive is:

kinship thinks the average Westerner is overpaid to teach ESL here and this entire thread is intended to drill that point home.
Any actual exchange or discussion of ideas cannot take place in this thread. It will all subversively be diverted to this sentiment. It's pretty hard for me to imagine people wanting to play along when it's so directly stated like in the quote above.

Obviously not and I don't know why I even stuck my own head back into this thread. Oh right, boredom...I am most definitely overpaid for my services. |

| As Ttompatz says, move on if other places are paying more. Our arguments don't really matter much nor do some Koreans who gripe about our pay. Ultimately what drives our wages or lack thereof is good old fashioned supply and demand, along with economic conditions in the country in question. That's how markets work. |

Pay cut = NO.
If someone says to me "how about we give you a little more B if you accept less A"...
...then I say "I want a lot more A, and more B, and more C too". That ends the discussion. |

Korea is a G20 "developed" nation so there is no reason to take a cut so someone else can line their pocket or make further profit at my expense.
Korea is not the be all, end all for work outside of our home countries.
For a newbie entering EFL then perhaps it might still be the best choice in terms of pay and savings but not to take pay cuts for the privilege of staying here.
If someone is tied to Korea for heritage or family reasons and was unwilling or unable to move onward or upward due to limits in their credentials or abilities then perhaps I could understand.
There are more than ample opportunities in the education / EFL industry in Asia and I am not tied at the apron strings to Korea so, no. I would NOT take a pay cut to stay employed nor would I take a pay cut to stay in Korea.
I will move onward, upward and forward.

Good grief people.
ttompatz, you're at the risk of sounding like a know-it-all when you're obviously not. |
???
You mean I should take a pay cut so some place like CDI can rake in more cash at my expense?
Perhaps I should take a cut in pay for the simple privilege of staying in Korea?
It must be the ultimate destination for all people and they must all have some need to be here? It is the Nirvana of the world, a veritable Shangri-la.
NOT.
Perhaps the people of Korea are so poor and disadvantaged that they need our assistance and discounted labor? It's not like PS teachers are taking a pay cut or schools have quit wasting funds on the appearance of English for their "English Rooms".
Perhaps there is no work for us poor, disadvantaged foreigners outside of this great land of S.Korea. We must stay here because there are no other options?
I could understand an "it depends" answer for someone who is tied here by family or heritage.
It makes NO sense otherwise to take a pay cut for the simple reason of staying employed or staying in Korea. There ARE other options that are equally as valid and well paid for anyone who can qualify for an E2 in Korea.

You should "move onward, upward and forward" instead of acting like Lord God almighty on dave's esl board. FYI the LAUSD is looking to hire their new superintendent. Come back to the states and get this position. Or try to become an US immigration officer and forget about giving out tips on how to get an E2 visa on this board. Enough is enough. |

It id my impression that becoming a superintendent usually requires that the applicant has a local teaching license. I would assume that Ttompatz's teaching qualification is from Canada and not California. Anyways, quite a few teachers prefer not to get involved in administration. And of course, it is not your place to say how someone else spends his or her free time.

And who do you think YOU are?
If anyone has a god complex around here, it's you honey pie.
ttompatz knows a hella lot more than you on any subject you could name, and he has helped more people here than you have met in your boring little life.
Do your mommy and daddy know you're using their internet like this ? |

Why even reply at all to this beastly little trickster.
Poor Koreans. So tortured by self-hate. And all the plastic surgery and all the university degrees from fancy Western schools in the world can never, never make that gnawing little voice of terror inside go way. |

Tom, my soon-to-be-former boss has become a good friend. Had she needed me to take a cut, I'd have done it, because she'd have given me legal permission for a second job, and would have given me reduced hours (from my already nice schedule of 2-7:30.) Taking a cut doesn't always make one a patsy.
Like I said: I'm taking a new job that will pay me a bit less than my current one, but I'll be working a fantastic schedule and will have 5 months of paid vacation. |
Wahoo! Turns out it's a slight pay raise. Happy times |

How is that? Did EPIK alter their payscales? (Or did you get a new job?) |

Gangwon EPIK is bringing its contracts in line with the national model. No more 1++. Shortened vacation time too. |

They paid more? Never heard of 1++ before. I think all EPIK will have one less week of vacation for renewal, which should take effect by next year. I know in most provinces you can eventually become a 1+ which puts you at 2.7 million a month, plus more if you live in a rural area and do multiple schools. I think the cities pay less. GEPIK pays less too, I believe? If the market stays super competitive, it's possible they may cut pay back a but in the future. But, who knows? Did GEPIK cut theirs back? Heard something about some teachers leaving and going to hakwons. |

This is probably due to Korean teachers complaining about waygook's pay & benefits.
It should be the other way around, EPIK should bring their contract in-line with gangwon EPIK. |
